nutrino, it looks like MD, "Machine doubling" to me. The year is also well known for trails, particularily on the REV. It takes a little looking, but once you find one, then it becomes very easy. They are new, and if you visit "Trails.com", you will see what you are looking for. Some are very spectacular.

I don't even see machine doubling. I see a completely normal coin.

Chuck, I was going by the bottom of the chin, and nose. Is it that a very steep angle there, that causes this? It was on some years, on the wheats, as I recall I'm not sure if it might have been a change to relievs stress, or something else. It didn't carry over more than one or two years, if at all. Or is it just my vision? Thanks,
Dick

Dick,

Trails.com is a camping/hiking website. Is this a subtle way of getting me off of coins and onto another hobbie? ROTF Laughing

I don't believe this is a trails die either - just a normal coin. But the site for trail dies is traildies.com - not trails.com. here:

http://traildies.com/

As for the steps and a clash - that's not the right place for a clash. A clash affects the lowest relief on the coin first, not the highest relief. What you are looking at could be planchet discoloration, some damage to the planchet prior to the strike, or any host of numerous things that could cause a line on a coin...but it's not an error of any kind.
