Here is one I am curious about:

I was looking at my three '69-S coins, and one is obvious MD, one is what you see, and the third, an obvious grage job.
None of the pgotos on site, show this. Maybe a new one? looks like S/S, South.

Dick,

It's MD, notice it's the same on the top of the S and the top of the 9s. 69 is full of teasers when you're looking for the big one Wink

Thanks, Ed. I posted a larger view, checking to see if it would be useful. Opinion? I saw the MD on the date, but didn't think it affected the MM.

Dick,

This one works good because you can see the date to see it had the same doubling which was the best clue on the mintmark.

The new camera must be working good, the pics are nice!

Smile

Thanks for the comments. I was just checking to see if an RPM, and a MD could be on the same coin. Apparently, not. The rest was experimenting with the camera. The rest of the photo shots will be in testing, or photosection, where they belong.

Most certainly an RPM or doubled die AND machine doubling can be on the same coin. That's part of what makes them completely different from one another. Here's a scenario:

A die maker creates a die that has its final hubbing off center - a doubled die.

A coiner hangs it on the press, starts the coining process, unknowingly making doubled dies.

The coiner gets called away from the running press, and comes back ten minutes later and pulls a finished coin from the line and notices that the die has come loose...it's creating machine doubled coins. He tightens the die and goes back to unknowingly making doubled dies.

During the ten minute break, the press was creating doubled dies that exhibited machine doubling because the die was loose in the press.

This sort of thing happened frequently.

Most interesting, Chuck! I was not aware that could happen, so readily. Yes, it no doubt was noted soon by QC, lest many, many doubled died be produced.

I agree. Very nice pics Dick. It's nice to have the right equipment to do the job right.
