Is that error/doubled die real or is it an April Fool's joke?

I'm assuming if it's a hub doubled coin more will be found and someone will post one.
Check it out on the CU forum. (search for DC)

Looks like a doubled die to me. MUCH more convincing than most of the little flyspeck stuff people have been calling doubled dies on the statehood quarters.

How can there be so much shift on the E in Ellington and none anywhere else in those letters?

The doubling appears to be rotated slightly as well. I think the lower portions of the LLI also show some doubing -- but it is getting into the keyboard so it is harder to spot. This form of 'single squeeze' doubling tends to be limited to a very small area at the center of the design. So I'm not surprised to see that the other letters are not doubled to the same extent as the "E" in Ellington.
I agree -- it is a nice DDR. And I think it will have more collector appeal because the doubling involves a letter. IMO - there are probably a dozen or so 'State Quarter' varieties that are just as impressive -- but extra rocks, earlobes, branches, etc. just don't appear as obvious doubled dies like a doubled letter or a number does.

I tend to go along qwith the 'doubling theory, re the center of the coin, too.

While we are in this area, I want to let everyone know that the Mint has stopped production of the '09 nickels, and dimes.Things are going to be tight for those denominations!

That probably won't interest collectors much as very few of these coins are collected and not too much in demand.
