1989-S

Last night I was looking through some of the coins that I placed in 2 x 2 holders years ago and came across this 1989-S

As you can see it was in circulation for awhile.

Is this just someone spending a proof coin or possibly something else.

Definitely a circulated proof coin. Pretty cool!

Unfortunately it's worth about a quarter in that condition.

But...if graded I could almost guarantee it to be a pop 1. hehehe

no but seriously anytime you find a proof in circulation, you almost have to wonder why? I have found about 5 in my time searching. mostly quarters and nickels though.

Most of it has to do with kids breaking open dad's collection and spending it. Other times it's proofs that have gone bad due to improper storage. I've bought rolls of proofs that had bad ones that I spent. Probably a dozen of them over the years. I had nothing better to do with them and considered them a storage liability because I wouldn't sell them...so just eat it and spend them. Profit can come from other areas.

I've done the same with substandard coins from BU rolls. if I get a roll that has spotty coins, I toss those in the bank box and replace them with better coins before reselling the roll.

Some proof sets sell for so cheap nowdays!
Many sets sell for about $3-4-5.
I've seen many sell on ebay for 99 cents plus shipping.
They have $1.91 in face value.
If a coin is not a high grade or it's sub-par to sell the set on ebay for $3 and pay listing fee, paypal fee, a bubble mailer and a drive to the post office it might make sense that some folks pull a gem from a set and spend the rest of the set.

That combined with thieves or kids spending their parents coins probably explains most of them.
