I'm not sure if this is posted in the correct place. I wanted to ask about inverted S mintmarks. I found a 1947 with an inverted S mintmark the other day and was wondering if this was common for a period of time. I had read that the 1946-S inverted was somewhat rare but what about other years? In my 12 years of coin searching I don't think I have come across more than a couple. Are they hard to find or have I just been unlucky (until now)?
Thanks
Rock

Maybe it's something most collectors don't look for?
Maybe more exist than people notice.
1947 does have atleast 2 styles of S, some are sans serif (flat on the top faces downward) and some are serif style (flat on the top faces foreward).
1946 has atleast 3 styles of S, sans serif and the serif style and ball serif. That makes it harder for me to spot the inverted ones!

Ed, unti you mentioned the differences between the serif, sans serif, and ball serif, I had never known just what they were, and had never sought to clarify. Where does the "trumpet-tail" belong? Is that the same as the ball serif

Is there a pic of the differences somewhere to compare? Actually, I did find pics. The 1947-S I have is a ball-serif mintmark.
Thanks

Sorry. I was wrong. I looked again and it's a san-serif not a ball serif mintmark. But it is inverted.

You can look up one of the mixed years on the dateguide and see each type among the RPMs.

See if this helps:
1946-S Inverted mint marks
1946-S Different styles of mint marks

Rock,
I have not heard of, or seen a 1947S with an inverted mintmark. Do you have pictures of it?

Hi Bob,
No, I don't have pics yet. Not until my son comes down with the microscope which will be around May 5th. He and I plan to photograph several coin varieties we have found over a 3 day period. I could try a macro pic but I don't know if it would be large enough to see the mintmark.

I'm not sure if this was answered before, but the 1946S inverted mintmark is the only known inverted mintmark on Lincoln cents. ANY other inverted mintmark would be quite valuable and unknown to exist at present.

Here are a couple of pics without any type of magnification.
It may not be inverted, but it sure looks that way to me. Perhaps there is more I need to learn on the subject. I can't imagine finding something nonexistent.
