From your pictures, I wopuld say yes. I am no expert, but the details are clear enough to say it is. Nice photos, and nice find!

I think it's a RPD.

I don't have anything that lists that one but it might be listed someplace.

To help narrow down the variety your coin is a "fancy 5".

If I saw that on an IHC, I'd say it's an RPD. Very Happy Nice find!

Did they have fancy 5 varieties on 2 cent pieces?

Yes they had fancy 5 and normal 5 on 2 cent pieces. This coin is the fancy one. Similar to IHCs. I'm not sure if both types were used on other denomination 1865 coins other than IHC and 2 cent pieces.

Some date types on IHCs are on other coins from the same years. For example 1873 open and close (or closed) 3 is on other denominations, maybe everything except dollars.

I don't know for sure, but there is something regarding the 8 digit on either the two cent coin or the indian head cent that sticks out in my memory as being 'common' - and it has something to do with a tail sticking out of the side of the 8...much like this.

The 5 is definitely repunched, and I agree that it is a fancy 5.

I cracked open my Snow guide for 1865 and read that the same digit punches were used on the 1 and 2 cent pieces for that year. For the punch using the "plain 5", there is an odd shoulder on the right side of the upper loop of the 8, and a less dramatic defect on the right side of the lower loop. These defects are absent on the fancy 5 punches, so perhaps that's an RPD on the 8 as well? Confused I could easily be wrong, since I'm not exactly matching obverse dies here.

Just for of curiosity's sake, is the "fancy 5" used only in this year, or is it "common" for the fives thruout the series?

Dick,

I'm not sure about all years but 1875 and 1885 IHCs are plain 5.

And the 1859 IHC used a different punch too.

Looks like we will have to do a bit of digging. In my case, I'll have to get a few, to "dig into"!
