I wanted to call attention to something odd I saw on eBay. A few weeks ago, I noticed this raw 1955 DDO for sale there. Does anyone see anything strange here?
Then, this past week I noticed another raw 55 DDO for sale with similar peculiarities. Perhaps it's just my eyes... ...but in both cases, why are both 1 digits flared at the top?
As a comparison, here's a detail from a certified coin:
Mind you, I would never buy an unslabbed 1955 DDO unless I was absolutely sure of the source. I just found this recurring detail a bit strange.

Are you saying that the 1 is flaring up a little at the top right?
The first coin looks like it is heavily damaged. Like someone took an ice pick to it.

Agreed--there's something off about the coin surface on the first photo, and it appears they tried to clean it up in photoshop. Yes, the flares on the top of the one digits got my attention, but perhaps I've been staring too closely? Guess I'm on the lookout for new die-struck forgeries. Some good IHC fakes have turned up recently.

It has vertical lines like it was horribly cleaned with a wire brush. Like whizzing but in one direction.
Might have been a lot better before it met with that fate.
