Grading my personal collection.

I've decided to catalogue my 2 Lincoln cent books, an Intecept and a Dansco. A simple spread sheet with dates, grade and value. I picked up a current coin value mag and created my spread sheet. Then the hard part. Grading the coins. I've collected Lincolns long enough to have a pretty good sense about generic grading. I've always just used the main grades, ie; good, VG, Fine, EF etc, But this time I wanted to try to give each coin a more precise accurate grade and it's a lot harder than I imagined. But when a coin jumps several dollars over a couple of points, I feel I needed to have a handle on at least my own collection. I really have an admiration for those who have mastered this art. There are so many combinations to account for. I do think though that with enough practice I will get good enough at it but will never be an expert. Has anyone else graded their collections or do you send off your coins to TPG's? How important do you think it is to have an accurate grade for your coins?

Rock, you have mentioned a part of the hobby, that very few of us undertake. Grading! That is an art, in itself. So many things to consider! I tried to grade, but gave it yp as a bad choice, because I could never get the same grade on the same coin twice in a row. I wouls like to just make an inventory og my collection(s). That would take a TPG, plus a typist, (which I am not), and many hours of recording, not to mention a lot of money. It isn't that thety are so valuable, just that there are tons of wheat, most denominations of the Canadian coins, and then there are the coins of Mexico. No I feel this choir will eventually have to be spread among several people. We all get to share in them: I gather them, they sort, grade, list, attribute, evaluate, encapsulate, store, and anything else that should be done. Then sit back and enjoy what they have done, because in gathering them, I have had the fun, and pleasure of having found many different varieties, thanks to Coppercoins forum, for having taught me the way to search, and recognize these very varieties that make this such a fascinating hobby! Beetter quit! I am getting carried away, thinking about our common pleasure, and the GREAT pleasure of having just returned from watching my youngest Great-grandson graduate from high school, and the emminent birth , (in August), of my first Great-great--grandson! The odd part, is, Tghat i am thinking, that I am still young enough, that I could actually see a great-great-great-grand child!I have been blessed!
Sorry, Chuck! I started out with coins, and ended up with kids! Both have given me great pleasure, so I guess no harm done.

jusT as well be me, rather than some expert. I can't say there is much wisdom, but I do think one should be able to express themselves, and NOT offend anyone. I would resign, rather than to offend! If it makes someone laugh, then it has made their day. No charge for that!
