This one is strange.

Realy looks like a RPD to the east on the 8, it's very crisp and clear.

But inside the 8 and 9 going west is another.
(mostly shows on the 9 in the pic but I also see it in the 8 )

The pic doesn't show well but theres also doubling (maybe MD) (maybe not MD) going southwest at the base of 1 & 8..

Maybe this got 3 or 4 RPD date punches or a mix of MD and RPD?

What is this thing??? Rolling Eyes

I found this link and it seems to match!
Even shows the doubling below 18 that I couldn't show in my pic.

Anyone have a pic of the 1898 Snow 1?
(on the wiki site it won't show me a pic)

Hi,
Your IHC seems to compare very closely to the other, and I might guess they're the same, although the second mark in the upper part of the 9 isn't present on the other coin--perhaps that's a die gouge that happened later? Confused Seems I commented on the other coin too, and guessed it was an S-1 since the description matched most closely. Rick Snow only has a few pics up, and without an guide for that year your guess is as good as mine. Very Happy

Kurt,

I saw it was your reply on the other Laughing

I also think they're the same. Even the details on the lower ball of 9 and the doubling below 18 that my pic didn't show matches.

In my initial post I was saying the marks (going west) inside the digits made no sense and I think it's strike related or very faint. On my coin it's not in great shape but the protected inside of the digits still has luster so it shows well.

Smile

In one of my coins, it looks like the one with the hammer, and punch, also had a combination of palsy, and the ST. Vitus dance! It could also be hits, in both digits, but I reserve my thoughts in that respect. I think it is mulpiple punches. I will leave that decision to Rick. It and several others are scheduled to be seen by the "man who knows"! Until then, I will dream of what could be!

Hi Dick,

Be sure to update each post after Rick sees the coins.
Have fun, it's always fun to get some of the mystery coins solved. Smile

ERd, will do! it will be a while, because there is quite a few that I want to send, and at the same time be sure they are what I believe them to be. But, rest assured, the first ones to know will be here on "our" forum!
