I just read on CU,( http://forums.collectors.com/), about these items, and the seller, "jawsy". If you have bought any, be advised: They are FAKES"! They have been removed, but for how long???

In a recent issue of the Carson City Coin Collectors journal, Dr. Michael Fey provided a photo and discussed an album of fake trade dollars that had been purchased from a China based seller on ebay. He also identified other China based ebay sellers to look out for. These guys are not only selling fake coins, but some have been able to fake PCGS and NGC holders. This is something that can ruin the hobby. We all have to be careful that if something looks too good to be true, it probably is. I will provide some more detail when I have access to the journal.

I just figured out how we are going to re-pay those Trillions of dollare back to China: Everybody buy the fakes, and pay the Chinese debt with them!

The article by Dr. Fey was in the Spring issue of the Carson City Coin Collectors Journal, called Curry's Chronicle. The article was entitled: Fake CC Coins, Fake PCGS and NGC holders and the Collector Market. In the article, he refers to an album of fake Trade Dollars that sold on ebay Dec. 21, 2008 for $169.99. The item number was 320326212874. That item is not visible anymore.

Ebay dealers he mentioned are: "chinahunter@yahoo.com.cn" and Jinghuashei. Coin World published articles on November 17 and December 1 discussing Jinghuashei's efforts to sell fake coins in fake PCGS and NGC holders on ebay.

Also, I found this article on About.com that discusses how to spot a fake PCGS holder.

GarryN, Is this same info avaiable concernng NGC holders?
These fakes usrt be coming in by shipping containers, because they are so prevalent! I have seen three of the fakes, and took pictures of them. I was given one, and I know where the other tw are. The ones I checked are CuNi, and magnetic, under weight, because they are not silver, as was the genuine articles. I have posted photos on CC, and CCF, as well.
I might be able to obtain more info on this situation. I have "Family members in Carson city, who might be able to assist. I will contact them, and they in turn may contact the publisher of the "Curry's Chronicle".

you should post photos of them, Dick. NGC has voluntarily published diagnostics of the fake NGC holders on the NGC website. PCGS has not done that. FYI, The publisher of Curry's Chronicle is Rusty Goe, who owns Southgate Coins in Reno.

Here is the forum.

Also a blog that you can join. http://c4oa.blogspot.com/

If you are interested in Carson City coins, it is only $20 per year to get 4 100 page journals. All articles are written by members. I just had one of my own published in the Summer 2009 issue. Very Happy

Here is the link on the forum to some samples of Curry's Chronicle.

NGC has started doing online pics of every coin they slab so you can verify the ones you buy are real. (assuming they were slabbed after that started)

PCGS only has cert number look up but they do photos if you pay extra for TrueView photos.

Bottom line is don't buy stuff from China and if you buy anything big it's best to buy it from a good dealer you can trust to stand behind their stuff.

Smile

Ed, that is my standpoint, too! If it is made in the USA, why buy one "made in China"? It obviously is going to be a fake!

This CU thread has some pics, the thing about these are that some are cheap junk that might get sold for silver price without a good look. (they don't only make rare coins) Smile
