Speaking of IHC, I have five rolls that should arrive in the morning. I wonder what the odds are against finding anything older than 1880?
Why does that seem to be the "cut-off" date? Yet, the '58, 59, even the '63, and 65, seem to be easier to find? okay, I'm talking about the common, every day stuff that we get. like in the wheats, 40-58', but few teens, and even fewer early thirties. Must be the mintage, maybe? Looks like my keyboard is going to pot! I get about half of the "upper-case", that I want.

Dick,
What you said almost exactly matches the mintage numbers.
The 66-79 are low mintage years.
Also 61 and 85 are a bit low.
Other than that everything is higher mintage except 08-s and 09-s.

Ed, Looks like I am finally getting something close to correct. It just takes a while, (and a lucky guess)! I'll let you know what comes out, when I finish checking the rolls.

There are basically four divisions in the IHC series...
1. CuNi dates 1859-1864 through 1865 are slightly more common.
2. The tough dates - 1866-1878.
3. Semi-tough dates - 1879-1886.
4. Common dates - 1887-1909...except the two S mints.
Your finds in mixed rolls will mirror these divisions, with most coins being #4, then #1 and #3, and last #2.

Chuck, I agree, for the most part. my finds are just a bit different, IE, #2, and #! have been reversed. I can't find a "70's, at all. I have two sets, minus the '77, ans the 09, and 09-S. It hasn't been easy, but I enjoy the challenge!
Thanks for your input.

Like others said--low mintage, plus the Mint started melting down cents in the late 1870s towards re-minting to cover a strange piece of legislation to favor banking. That made many scarce dates even more so. That's at least what Rick Snow says in his Red Book. You have a better chance finding an IHC in the 1860s than the 70s. By 1879, the mintages were ramped up...but I've never seen any IHC cent from the 70s in random lots.

Kurt, and ED, The IHC's came in this morning, all TEN of them, in six rolls of qwheats! The dates on the wheats arehigh teens, and pretty solid thru the '58, except for the keys. i didn't expect to see anything good, and it turned out, I didn't! the IHC were 1897-1907. Not an RPD in the whole bunch. looks like I am going to have to find a source for FE/IHC, if I plan on finding any more dates, (that I don't already have almose a roll of)! Horse-feathers!

Yeah...that's pretty typical for the avg circ IHCs. Everything earlier usually gets sorted out for individual sale. At some point, I just gave up finding earlier IHCs in lots, because they're scrutinized much harder than wheats; most everything outside of 00-09 avg circ IHCs goes into a 2x2, with a "premium price"--even culls. It's rather funny...last show I spent 3 days assembling just 12 "good" (F15 and higher) IHCs prior to 1880 for a friend.

Hi Kurt!
I am begining to think, it might be a good idea to just get a case of the cent folders, and start filling them up with what is on hand! there would be a bunch! yhe only ones that would be missing for the most part would be the '14-D, and the '09-S VDB. I have all the rest, (almost).
A thiught, that might interest you: Check the LCR, and contact "Desertgem". You and Jim have much in common.
