Chuck, You said the extra ("remnants") part of the "T" in liberty, are the remnants from a clash. I was looking at an overlay, and don't see how it can be. Not to question your call, because I am the least qualified, but it doesn't seem to be possible, due to the placement of the "T" equally between the columns, and none of the vertical bar, touching either column. My question is: Can there be that much variation in the dies, to allow that call? I thought the image was MD. Thanks for your patience!
Dick

Dick,
It looks like die alignment alone might cause that might shift.

Hi Ed, Did you see the images rteferred to, on CU? The look of the "T" is what my question is based on. It is the same size as the vertical bar on the "T", so I thought it might be MD, even tho no other letters are involved.
This is the image I refer to.
Now, another question: Woult the "Y" show a slight bit of doubling, if that were the case? Does it look a bit thicker left leg?

Dick: Keep in mind during a clash the dies could bounce after contact with each other. But the mark east of the t could be a column outline. The fields touch each other leaving a raised area on the die were the devices outline hits the opposite die. The mark on the center of the t looks like die movement west. The contact between the two dies would affect that area on the obverse die.

If you look close above the T you can see where a short section of the clash continues above the horizontal bar.
Just thinking out loud, the clash might have been deeper along the vertical bar so that part stayed after polishing. My analogy would be Big Foot steps next to a crack and that footprint will be deeper than a print far from the crack because the dirt has an area to move into. Then polish his prints away and all that remains is the deep area next to the crack.

I didfn'y see any signs of any polishing, so I eliminated the clash prospect. They did a good job of cleaning it. I would not have believed it could come out so clean. Learned something new today. Thanks to several people!
