I can't tell much from the image, but the "L" will be on the ribbon, up close to the base of the skull area.
I can't see the bust well enough to tell one fro the other.

Yes, I think it's the L pointed bust variety.

Here is something I've found in the 2008 red book.

What you might try is get a good pic of the point of the bust (of this coin which looks pointed) and the same pic of another 1864 that doesn't look pointed. Side by side I think it will show that this one is the pointed type with the L but L is worn away.

It may still be there among the corrosion?

Looks like the L is still there in your highlight.

Is your coin copper nickel, coop? Here is a pic of a copper nickel 1864 with L, also corroded. You can still see the upright of the L thru the corrosion.

http://indiancent.wikispaces.com/1864+With+L+CN

I dont see the upright in coop's picture. Is it there?

Another thing, does it seem to you that the position of the date is different? In the link above the flag of the 1 is right under the tip of the bust. In coops picture the 1 seems to be shifted to the right a little more. The wiki at Indiancent.com does not have any other CN photos of No L coins as yet. Some of the bronze photos are provided.

I just figured out that the wiki page is accessible from the Research link on the indiancent.com home page.

Garry: It is an edit version of the original poster's coin. I Photo Shopped it to see if there was an L hidden in the shadows.

Hmm...at present, I read in Snow's books of just one known non-proof CN "L" 1864. I cannot tell by looking, but if this were #2, that would be quite a find! Very Happy
