Has anyone seen the program Pawn Stars? It is a program that documents people who bring items into the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas and what the operators do to authenticate things. What a great program. Its a grandfather, Richard" (The Old Man), his son Rick and grandson Corey who operate the pawn shop. They had a segment the other day about a Carson City Morgan Dollar. The grandfather had put it in the case at $50. Rick looks at it and realizes its a Carson City that he said was worth $500. I only saw the reverse and it looked like a typical mint state dollar. So convinced the old man is blind, they make him search thru a pile of silver dollars to find a Carson City dollar. Very funny segment.

Has anyone been to that shop?

I watched it.

In the first place I thought they'd be ripping the customers but after seeing the CC dollar part I think it's more likely they buy fake junk without knowing. I didn't see them using a loupe to check the coins. First they priced that CC at $50 then raised it to $500 when they saw the CC on it. Then they tossed it in a can of Morgans and dumped them for the old guy to sort which isn't good for it. The old guy said he was an expert on US mints and you can ask him anything but then he said Morgan Dollars were also minted in Charlotte LOL Wink Watch that episode close for a laugh.

The other funny one was the Rolex watch.... He gave it to his watch guy and the watch guy said "I can make it look factory" then when he sold it to a customer he said "the owner hardly used it, it's factory finish" LOL Wink

I was surprised what he paid for the cannon, I think it was $30,000. Sort of funny they tested it on a potted palm tree and blasted it. I wonder if any customers come in for cannons.

It's a fun show to watch.

If any of you watched some of the diffwerent photoshop effect videos, it will give you an idea as to what Coop does, with coins, at least. i imagine he does a lot more than we are aware of.... I, personally had not given much thought about what it actually encompassas, but, after watching the videos, I have a whole new concept of just what can be done. Way to go, Coop!

Fiddle, if you go find out how much the Benny Binion hat is. I assume he is the brother of the late Ted Binion of silver dollar hoard fame who was killed allegedly by one or more members of his family over money.

Speaking of the "binion Hoard", I wonder how many of our members bought some of it? I for a fact, biught two bags. It was a way, (exp[ensive), but it did fill a lot of holes in my new folder! In fact, that is where my three '09 VDB's came from. I suspect you might have gotten one, as well The story indicated a Body-guard/Emnployee, who helped buiold the underground vault, and the wife all had somethng to do with it. I don't have the facts, just a supposition. Maybe she found out he was going to leave it all to "Charity"..........The "sweet young thing" he was fooling around with! You have heard mention of the "win-win" situation? Well this was a "lose-lose
" situation! Even the coins were 'losers!

Couldn't find the place..... I asked at the front desk... asked a cab driver... asked a bus driver...... asked a topless dancer(whoops Laughing ) nobody has heard of that place....

Besides that, Las Vegas has gotten worse with all the construction going on, since I was there last ( 10 yrs. ago).
It took me almost 2 hrs. just to go the couple miles to see the hoover dam.....

but I did ride the insanity...... screamed like a little girl Embarassed

I haven't been to "Vegas" in years, so I can't say if it is still there, across from the 4-Queens casino. I used to sleep in the back of the pickup, with my little chihuahua. Nobody came close, so I was not disturbed. meanwhile, the wife would be playing the slots. I had a credit card from binion's, that I used to get a full tank of gas, to gett back to San Bernardino, CA. It fina;;y broke in two pieces. no problem, because we hadn't been back in years. Before i collected cents, and other coins. I was working 80 hours a week, for Kaiser Steel, and taking home $1000/ week. nor the same situation now. i make a little more than that a month, in my pension.

When I saw the show I didnt get the impression that the old man was looking for the same CC coin in that pile. I thought they put another circulated one in there.

I have seen alot of Binion Hoard coins, but I have never bought one. The ones I have seen in NGC holders are not graded. I dont understand that. So I havent paid much attention to them.

Was the Binion hoard from the cassino guy?

Yesterday they had a show about how the chick and her boyfriend supposedly knocked him off. They tried to dig up his 8 million $ of silver but got busted. In the end they got off the murder charge but got 5 years for trying to dig up the silver.

Is the hoard from that?
