In 1978, an Oregon National Guard truck made a new door in my Dad's shop. It was purely an accident (not an unhappy customer) caused when a steering part broke on the truck. I'm finally getting around to scanning some old photos and thought this one worthy of posting to the net.

I didn't know VW made trucks like that  Also, what are the chances that the truck just happened to 'visit' an auto repair facility??

I think I have an equation for what has happened:
1978+National Guard=No War to train for
(No war to train for)+Weekend drill=large amounts of alcohol
Large Amounts of alcohol+goverment equipment= Large truck embedded in VW repair shop

1978 = Army is very 'un-cool' from the Vietnam stigma. The "Join the Guard and pay for College" concept was just kicking off. And if I recall correctly, the driver was 16 years old! It was a mighty big vehicle to trust to a rookie driver.

The truck smashed the office and bathroom (just behind the wall that he hit). The left bay was the parts room and the 2nd bay is where my dad kept his 1930 Ford Model A. As you can see, everything got shoved back into the third bay (on the right)

The two left fenders and running board got minor damage. It could have been worse. Those old cars had heavy sheet metal. The Guard paid for all the damage - so it looked good as new when all was said and done.
BTW: this happened on a Sunday so none of us were in the building. I did work for my Dad at the time. It would have been quite a shock had I actually been working that day. Had one of us been sitting on the 'John' or in the office doing the books -- I don't think we'd have walked away.

wow did your Dad close the wall back up or add that new large door he always wanted but didn't have the money for? lol 
in 1978 i bet it was more than just alcohol.  I was in my 3rd year Army (active) in 78 and if i remember right we did it all. "not me" I was a good boy then. I didn't even try a bear (except the German bear) but you know how it is"when in Roam"
glad no one was hurt. that had the potential to be a very bad day for a lot of people. glad you wasn't there

Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up like every two hours?
Could be more thruth than poetry! I tend to sleep like that, until dawn, then I will sleep for four hours, very soundly.
I wionder if it had anything to do with the fasct that I was born at 6 AM?
