Oh, Boy! Look what came in the mail today. I have wanted one of these things for a long time.

It is very pretty. Not quite MS, I don't think, but probably AU.

Are you going to slab it? I would, if for nothing other than authentication and protection.

Yes, I am definitely going to have it slabbed. I bought a lot of coins on eBay and this was the bonus coin. The people I bought the lot from were very nice and had excellent feedback, but I know that this is a commonly counterfeited coin. I can’t wait to find out if it is authentic and how it grades. In my hand it looks AU or better. Thanks y’all for the flowers, too.

Great score Dennis, that will be one heck of an addition to your collection. Slabbing that is also a must.

The coin surely looks AU or better. It also looks to be red and brown. Let us know how it comes back from grading. That is a nice coin btw.

The mint mark looks like it is in the right place. It appears to be in the same position as this one, with a slight tilt to the right. See photo

I cant see the die lump in the upper loop of the S in yours though. All the mint marks have it. Check for that.

The "B" in VDB looks like the correct variety too. See photo.

Garry,
Thank you for the info and the links. I have looked at the mint mark with my loupe and I can tell you that I need something better. I think I can see the "lump" in the mint mark, but I'm not sure. A scanner takes poor images, too.

I just need to send it in to a TPG. The question is, which one? Even people on the PCGS boards recommend me sending it to ANACS . (I think there is a bad taste in everybody’s mouth because PCGS raised their rates.) I am also told that there is less chance of my coin coming back in a body bag, unless it is a counterfeit.
What do folks around here recommend as far as TPG’s?
Dennis

First thing, you can send the coin to me for a first check. All I will charge is the postage home. If it's a fake, I will be able to tell, and will save you the money of any of the TPG services.

If you think you need to sub it to them first, go with ANACS. That's the only one I recommend.

What, pray tell, is a TPG?

PCGS raised rates? They were already the most expensive. Did all the others adjust rates too?

TPG=third party grading.

I'm not sure if they all raised their rates but but it is a shrewed move. People are complaining about the time it takes them to grade the coins so they raise the prices, less people submit, they make the same amount of money and turnaround times are reduced.
