Hey,
My name's Marshall (obviously). Basically caught the coin bug last week. Surfed around the internet and found some useful sources. I'm notorious for joining forums that have the slightest to do with what kind of mood I'm in, so here I am.
Basically I was going through my late Fathers little chest he gave to me. Had all sorts of cool things like old Military colors, rings, old pocket watches, and among other things, coins. Only a handful were located in this chest though. Noticed a couple wheat pennies and thought they were pretty cool. I've always been aware of wheat pennies, just never really payed too much attention to them. So I decided that whenever I came across a wheat penny I'd slap it in the box, and pass it along to my kids when I croke.
So not thinking much of it, I went out and told my mom, "If you ever find any wheat pennies, I want them". To make a long story short, my Father had a whole collection of coins everyone had forgotten about, sitting in his closet. I was never aware of this. So my mom says she'll look for them. About 30 seconds later she comes out with a tall tin liquor container and a coffee can.
570 Wheat Ears. 1 Indian Head. 1 Liberty Head V Nickel. Many pre-1983 Lincoln Memorials. Lots' more American coins worth keeping. A Zip-Lok bag of foreign coins. And more I'm sure I'm forgetting.
What can I say. I'm hooked. I want to stay with strictly American coinage, but will take in any lost World coins. Now that I've researched a bit further, I'm excited each and every time I get a new-old penny or any coin for that matter. The thought of something being valuable that has been passed around for decades is really cool.
Still with me? I know I'm not..
So I could post more, but I'm not going to.
Later
-Marshall

Welcome aboard! You have found the forum deals more at depth, in copper coins than any other. As you will find, (if you havent already), it deals primarily in Varieties. It is the only one of it's kind.

Thanks Fellas'
Yeah all the information on the forum is really over whelming right now. I thought only a few years had flaws and die variations. Boy, was I wrong. Just got done sifting through my Lincoln Memorials. Wrapped 13 rolls of Post-1982 coins before I ran out of wraps. Those are being swapped at the bank tomorrow. First time doing this sort of "operation" too. Pretty excited.

Thanks guys.
I haven't actually went through my "new" pennies yet. I was actually sort of let down. I asked for 3 rolled UNcirculated, and 10 rolls circulated. Well since I wasn't there for the transaction, I got 3 rolls of circulated coins rolled at the mint and 10 rolls circulated hand rolled from bank customers. Oh well.. but I kind of missed my uncirculated 2009 penny opportunity. Putting in a 2010 order soon though. Will get back with my findings after I search!
Happy New Year.

Edit: Does anyone have any info on the new penny and how to get it? The bank gave me the treasurey website and said I could order them there. Well that's a lost cause because I see no signs there of the new penny. They also said "We have no idea when we will get them". Oh thanks, that's helpful lady.
Also, any ways to get uncirculated 2009 pennies? Thanks
-Marshall (Again)

Ken,
PMed. And I look out for wide AM's, 95 Double Dies, and 84 Double Ear. Anything I'm missing?

Thanks Bennie.
Hey guys, who makes a good magnifying piece for viewing coins? Also, where could I get one? Please keep in mind, I don't want to spend a ton of money on one of these. Thanks

Lots of these out there...I like my 'Eyeclops' from Toys R Us, but it is hand held and I guess I shake a bit. I know there are inexpensive 10X loopes available for good coin viewing. I like the way I've heard collectors put it-if you can see a coin's doubling with a 10X loope then it is a keeper. I've bought these loopes for under $10...easily. Just do a search for 'coin magnifiers' and they will come up for you.
