The area below the mm looks to have been ground deeper in the die? Thought it looked interesting.
Thanks
Mike

You are correct that something was gouged out of the die in that area. I have seen a number of coins struck by that die, and have never really known exactly what caused it, but it appears that some metal was peeling from around where the mintmark was punched and someone removed it without following up with a polishing of the area.
One of these could possibly sell for a couple of bucks to a curious collector, but they are not really considered errors and wouldn't have a price guide value.

All mine went back in the tubes. It's not a die variety, and not interesting enough to the error collectors to have value. Yeah, it's interesting, but my limited space is reserved for coins that are not only interesting but valuable.

We've had several people find ones from that same die and post them.

You sure it's a gouge? Looks like metal movement to me.

It looks to me like the coin took a hit and the metal moved.

It's from a damaged die, I think this is the 4th time we had one posted on the site. Here's another from that same die:
Also notice both coins also have something like that same mark from below the vest to the rim.

I know I have seen these a number of times while roll searching. They are definitely damage to the die. Exactly how that damage occurred, I am not certain.

The "chin" coin is die damage for sure. The coin has also been cleaned (polished) as is evidenced by the small parallel scratches on the coin.
