I just had an odd experience on the Precious Metals forum there. Someone posted an Ebay listing that he won. The listing was for 30 90% silver Kennedy half dollars. 11 bids later it ended at $177. The coins arrived and they are all 40% silver coins. This is the photo that accompanied the listing

Of course I had to comment. Rolling Eyes I said 11 bidders and no one asked the seller what dates the coin were, or if the coins were all dated 1964? This is a sample of some of the comments I got back:

What question should they have asked? The auction clearly states thirty 90% Kennedy's"

That question is answered in his title of "LOT OF (30) KENNEDY HALF DOLLARS 90% SILVER (15 SHOWN)" since 1964 is the only circulated 90% Kennedy, the question need not be asked

The seller responded as follows. Very nice response but clear he doesnt realize that 1964 is the only date that contains all silver: I did not have them tested and someone told me they were 90% silver. If you had them tested and they are only 40% then I will refund you the amount or if you want to keep them I'll refund the difference

my comment: << And the seller's response indicates he still doesn't get it. >>

Response: "guess that makes 2 of you"

Blurry photo, or NO photo, with a title that says "90% silver", why would a potential buyer need to ask if they are all 1964's? Was there another year of the Kennedy that is 90%? If a seller had an item listed with the title of "Purple Plush Dino", I wouldnt expect ANYONE to have to ask what color it was. Get it?

My final comment: It is a simple question, tests the sellers reliability. It takes 5 seconds to ask the question. If you want to take a chance on that photo, no questions asked and pay $177 for $15 in coin or $1770 for $150 in coin or $17,700 for $1,500 and then go thru all the grief of getting your money back, go for it. We are not talking about 30 Mercury dimes. If I see that ad and I know that one year Kennedy Half Dollars were silver, six years they were 40% silver and since then they are zinc, I am going to ask the question. Why are we arguing about this?

Response:

Ahh, ok...its all clear now. So YOU are that pesky ebay bidder who asks me all those stupid and annoying questions that are answered right in the TITLE of my posted items. Message received.

What am I missing here?

At least you got a response from him. I bid on a lot of 290 IHC cents, quite some time ago, and my bid was "barred". I didn't know what he meant, and asked him ti explain. No response. I had bought wheats from him, in the past, and always gave positive feedback. To this day, I have not gotten a response from any of my questions. So be wary, of Vette1986. If there is a reason to bar my bids, I have a right to know why. I still have the wheat rolls, and the invoices, ( all thru PaypPa0, from day one. It serves as my inventory, as far as source, and amounts.

I was just commenting. The buyer was someone else and all I did was make a suggestion and stepped into a hornet's nest.

My understanding is that when an item is advertized as one thing, and it turns out that it IS NOT that item, then it is false advertising. The information on that auction was that t5hey were 90% silver. They were NOT. False advertisement.

GarryN, you mentioned having stepped into a hornety's nest. The size of the "hornets", usually is equal to the degree of intent to defraud, when discovered. Your intent was to help, and it was not well received. That seller will bear watchimng, at all times.

Well they could have been Kennedy Halves from silver sets? 1995-current date.

I hadn't considered that possibility, but from the picture, I would have bet a "wad" against it! I but the proof silver, and clad sets, but it didn't occur to me about the half dollars being silver. I don't kniow the % but It could be 90, or at least 40%.
