What you might try is taking a photo of it and another normal looking one at the same size.

I'd have to see at least a photo of the coin in question. There's probably a good logical explanation for this. Basically all the mintmarks on 1978D cents are the same size - so this has to be something else.

OOOPS!
I only saw ome "M", and interpreted it as wanting the comparable size given to the decimal.
It isn't the time of the year, so.....
Now if a photo were posted, we could go a bit farther.

Probably from the same punch, just placed deeper in the die making it appear larger.

Yep, it was that "new hire" that they put on the MM punch, that day.
The '70's are known for a lot of out of the normal things that decade.

OT, Coop, are you getting wet?
Looks like the high country is getting ready for a "white Christmas Eve". mother Nature just couldn't wait!
My brother had signs up, all around his place in Skull Valley. They said,"No trespassing The Elk are authorized to shoot back"! He has a small herd there, all year around.

That might be why I'm aching so bad tonight. It's been cold here.

I'm off my feet for a while after an operation on my foot. So I can do what I want, with my limitations.

You doing OK?

Yes, we are okay, within reason. there are many things not quiite up to "snuff, but all in all, we are fine.
The jet stream seem to have changed fron the norm,. to a straight W-E, and it is going over the sluthern Ca, AZ, NM, and into the southern states. Check the weather channel. I have the "weatherbug", and it fgives me the radar, and maps. pretty handy.
Yes, that could make it cold there. We are at 50 degrees, and rain, off, and on. Looks like abbout a week of it coming.
The upper part is at four-corners level, and south.
You are looking down the barrel!
Hope the foot is better. One can't do much without feet!
I did the washing today, Betty is not able to do much, with a walker, so I get to help. I found a 2009 log cabin in the washing machine. Nice and clean. No doubling, tho.

I hope the pics help... This is the first time I've used photobucket... Normally I upload directly from my computer... Is there a way to do that on this site or are we required to use a 3rd party site???

I do believe they are from the same size punch, just one is deeper - like Coop said. I will have to look more closely at the 1978D cents coming out of this late copper hoard I have and check them closely for different sizes.

One mint mark appears larger, but the 9's tell the story. One image is larger than the other one.

could a "polishing error cause the MM to be wider, due to the removed metal from the face of the die?

As far as uploading from the computer, I would say at this time, No, but I have never tried so not sure. I do upload from the computer, on another site. Chuck is the one that can say for sure. it would be nice. since Photobucket has made a lot of changes, I have a lot of trouble downloading, and should use another browser.
I may download the whole works onto a CD,or DVD, and find another host.

It could be several things.

Some are punched deeper.

Die wear can change how it looks.

Polishing the die can make one look smaller since only the deepest part remains after a lot of polishing.

It could be a different punch. If they changed the punch then you might see the new one carry into the next year. You might want to compare 78 with 77 and 79 to see if they changed the punch size.
