My computer died yesterday. Don't know when it will be running again yet. I'm using my Daughters computer for now till I know if there is hope for it or not. So much information lost if I can't revive it. So don't forget to back up information more so on an outside source. A computer only lasts about three years for me, max. I'll add a link to my profile in case someone needs to get in touch with me. In the subject of any emails put COOP, then I will know it is for me. I'll post when the problem is fixed. Not real good timing for me right now.

Hope you can save it!

I've been using the flash keychain drives for backup. They work good.

Like you said every 2-3 years something goes wrong and the PCs go south. The good thing is that most of the time you can re-load the operating system and they work another 2-3 years.

Good luck Smile

coop, it depends on what went wrong. If it is anything but the HDD, the data is intact.
I install new motherboards, about every other year, and add RAM, as a matter of choice. The OS, as long as it is not newer that your equip[ment wiorking with it, is okay. I use XP, by choice, even tho I have the Vists CD, (two versions, in fact), and wouldn't disgrace my machine, by installing it. Not to mention my (antique equipment).
If it is the HDD,there is still hope.
Depends on what the problrm is. If the HDD is still functional, then the data can be recvovered, or even the HDD installed into another unit, and then everything "made to feel at home", again.
I hope it is nothing catastrophic.
If I were handy, I would run, (walk, not much runnung these days), and check it for you.
BTW, how is the foot doing?

It is assumed by a relative of mine that it is the mother board. So I bought a new computer. I'm not a computer fixer. The new computer doesn't have outlook on it as install. I sent them a message (HP) and added this is probably a waste of time as I can't get an answer anyway. Don't you just love working with a new computer. So emails won't be working until I find an answer for this glich on the computer.

Good luck with that, coop. Customer Service on computers is almost non-existent. We will anxiously await your return.

It's just the old email address password where everything used to be. The internet tags are all safe.

Coop, hang onto that old computer.
The motherboard is no problem to replace, and the new MB will come with a new CPU, and most likely some RAM. (That is how all of mine were set up, when my Guru, semt it to me. then the installation is easy. It used to be easier, when I still could see the pimple on a gnats butt. I have trouble seeing the rear end of the car just ahead, today, so it takes a bit longer.
Mosr of the ones I replaced were in the range of $250.00.
That should give you some "food for thought".
Not to mention, that if you put in a new MB, then you have a 'back-up unit, and it you put ina very large HDD, you can send all the info you want saved, (in case of a dead unit), you will have it there, Just send an email, ant it is done.
I also have a 4GB USB Micro, HDD, that is very handy, just in case.

I find that after 3 years I need to reload the operating systems. I stick with XP, like Dick said it works better on old ones.

If you give up on it I might not do a motherboard unless there's a bargain on it, for $250-300 you can get a new PC. Not top of the line but it will be better than an old one and even the cheap ones come with more RAM. The only downside is new ones are less fixable and most don't even include a restore disk. They're like BIC lighters, not made to be fixed.

Ed, you may be right, in most of it, but i have always been a "generic", man. They are so much easier to repair, upgrade, and can do as much as any brand name unit, and the maint rtc is much cheaper. One doesn't have to go with the name brand for your unit. That is the main reason, I lwft the Apple/Mac, They all have the same components, and they all work just fine on a generic MB, so why the extra cash? If I went that way, in my coins, I would be with everything in PCGS, instead of RAW.
Some of my computers have been operating for over 15 years, and the only thing that has been changed, was the sysrtem board, and a new faster CPU, plus some RAM, and usually a bigger HDD. Like you say, $300-500. amnd it is as good as new, plus all your perifiphas work. You don;'t have to find new drivers..
But, to each his own. I wasn't born with a silver spoon, in my mouth. more like a wooden one,
and it probably was a "hand-me-down"!

Got the email working a different way, but able to get them. Now I've got to change my profile back. Everytime I change the email address it locks me out. So let's try it again??

You should really go with web email - like Gmail from Google - and stop using our ISP hosted email address altogether. I was very reluctant to do so myself until i found out that Gmail lets you 'import' all your normal email to it. So I have a gmail account that drags in my coppercoins, lincolncent, and other domain emails. In fact, I don't even use the gmail address - just the others. I just use Gmail as the interface.

Now I don't ever have to worry about being on any specific computer to read email - I can do it from any computer in the world with an internet connection.
