This coin is on ebay. The guys at Collectors Universe have been debating over 3 pages if the coin is real and if the clip is real. Near the bottom of the first page, Tom DeLorey [Capt. Henway] said that he believes the coin is a Chinese counterfeit and the edge clip flattened the perimeter so he does not believe it is a mint error. JMO, I believe the date is wrong for a '22 Plain and I agree the clip is PMD. Any thoughts please?

I think the clip is fake. There's nothing weak about the details near the clips edge and the edge looks raised along the clip and the rim looks mangled near the corners. It has no Blakesley but then big clips often don't so that doesn't matter.
It might be a damaged 22-P and they clipped off the damage.
Or it's fake, it looks a bit strange. The rims look chunky compared to most 22-P and from the pic the second 2 might not be bold enough. On a real 22-P the TRUST is better than IN GOD but I can't tell it from the pics and the toning looks thin like it was retoned and it looks greasy.
And to top it off, why wouldn't it be in a holder if it was real. Af it was it has enough value to warrant being holdered.

Ed, I agree. I wonder how true the arc is on the clip? it has to be the same as the opposite edge arc. It was cut with the same "cookie-cutter, so the arc has to be very close. I wnodered about the reverse, but then saw the second image, and I wouldn't touch it with a "11 meter" pole, as they say up north!

There is no Blakesley affect (wide rim 180 degrees from the clip itself). The wear on the surface does not equate to the condition of the coin or in other words, it looks to be made from a cast die and not a hubbed die.
I am sure that there are other "red flags" apparent with this coin, but just looking at it from the pictures, I would not buy. I believe it to be of oriental descent.
