Was going through some mint sets~I dunno, I thought it was strike doubling, but there is slight notching on the lower LIB, sorry it appears the light reflects too much. VDB looks way cool though! Thanks for any input!

I would have concluded everything looked like machine doubling until I saw the V.D.B. That looks like real doubling to me. Now I need to go back and look at one more area on my coins that I never take the time to look at.

I concur completely. I know that the VDB can look pretty bad and mushy a lot of times, but that pic shows nice doubling on the VDB. I am interested to hear others opinions on this also.

Remember that the VDB is in opposite relief of everything else on the coin...when a die bounces it would drag positive relief letters around, as evidenced by most of the photos. To the contrary, when a punch bounces, which is essentially what the initials are (positive relief on the die) it can bounce high enough to release itself from very shallow incuse devices and make a second impression.

Think of a mintmark punch bouncing and the hundreds of RPMs we have as a result. This same effect is what I believe happened to the coin photographed - not a doubled die.
