peace dollar....die trial, wrong planchet, or just wear?????
could it be the 5th die trial?????

seems weird to me that the high points on the coin are all that's left....but that might make sense because they were struck with the most pressure....and more metal to wear off...anyways let me know what cha think....

the planchet is half as thick as the normal peace dollar.....but the normal peace dollar weighs 28.9 grams and this coin weighs 26.8 grams.....leading me to think that it is something weird and not wear.....it is lighter but you would expect it to be much lighter then that....i compaired it to a normal UNC one and it was half as thick, but still had reeding.....let me know what you think guys....

28.9 grams? try 26.73 grams.

Is the entire slug half as thick or just the edge?

yeah I guess I should have been more clear....I was thinking backwards...by high points I ment where the die should have come in contact with the slug first... so i guess i was thinking about the die when I said high points...the slug is the same all the way across no fat spots or thin spots....to be honest this could be wear....but to get a coin to look like this would take some serious work if it was a lucky coin. and it dosen' have the shiny look or patterns of a polished coin.... this one has me a bit confused... I might have ANACS take a look at it at the next show I go to....

Looks like a pocket piece to me. If it were a die trial strike, the rim would still be upset on the planchet. I don't see any sign of that.

My boss at my last job had a walking liberty half he had carried for around 20 years. It was worn just about as much as the coin you show here. The only detail left was a bit around the edge of the eagle's wing. The obverse was completely gone.

Looks like NGC has graded a 1923 and a 1923-S in the Poor-1 to AG-3 range.

I'd venture a guess that yours would come back Poor-1.

No such grade as AG-1.

Poor-1 means the coin is in such sad shape that there is no date and it can only be identified as far as type.

Send in a Buffalo on the mound with the date worn off. At least you would know what year it was... LOL
