Hi gang, long time no post from me, been hot, rainy, and sticky here in Ma. Been bored so I did some art work on the computer, I figuered seeing the nickle is getting a three year reverse design face lift I'd try something for the penny. As you well know the 200th anniversary of Lincolns birthday will be upon us in 2009, I already contacted the BEP of the U.S. mint to find out if there is going to be a contest or where I can submit my reverse design change. It's the cabin where Abe was born, let me know what you think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Very Happy Cool

I really like it. I assume that's an accurate representation of his log cabin. The only thing that looks suspicious to me is the roof. Wasn't the original structure "open" (only three walls?) or was that something else? I seem to have that impression lodged in my brain somehow.

I think the artwork is well done, it's the right proportion, it has the right amount of relief as to make it "strikable" and it says the right thing (let us not forget our humble beginnings).

I think you have a winner there, Brian. Nice touch on the designer's initials.

What would go on the other side of the coin? I think there are laws stating US coins have to say "E Pluribus Unum" etc.

Thanks for the kind words Robert, and yes I did considered the obverse of the coin, with having to omit E.Pluribus.Unum to make room for the reverse design, I had to redesign the obverse.

I would imagine they get a lot of unsolicited proposals, so the official word might be "don't call us, we'll call you".

Having said that, this is as close to an official process as I can find at the moment.

Robert, I check out that FAQ and it's only for the 50 state quarter program, before I posted my pictuers here you had posted in Lincoln cents about a commem. cent for 2009 that was in Aug. issue of coin world. I just read that tonight, your post that is, I need to get a copy of that issue if I can find one. If not, could you post more of some of the info on that article. I'd really like to follow through with this idea, if I can't get rich at least I could be famous for a short time. Smile I didn't even realize there was a article written on the subject until now. I just did this because I was bored, funny how the universe works, that's it for now......... be well and thanks, Brian B. Wink

Very well done! I am sure the design process for the anniversay issye will be a long and arduous one. There is a proper channel for submitting coin designs and recommendation. I will research it and post the results. Who knows...we may have been the first to see the new design already!!

Thanks Bob, I'd appreciate that a lot, I found out the Bureau of Engraving and Printing only deals in paper so thats a wash, they refered me to the U.S. Mint Gov. for coins. They don't have a E-mail address, so I was go to call on the phone, I think I'll hold off on that phone call and wait and see what you come up with. The more info I can get to do this the proper way and through the proper channels the better. I'm glad everyone who's viewed it likes it, and Robert, you asked earlier in this thread if that was the exact representation of the cabin, to my knowage yes, unless the web is wrong. I typed in a search under Lincolns birth place and a half dozen sites or so came back. I found a picture of the cabin and went to work.
Thanks again everyone............ Brian B. Very Happy

Brian,

According to that article, Congress formed the "Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission". Its "Advisory Panel" considered using the old obverse with a special reverse(s). Nothing is scheduled to happen until they meet again in Oct.

The commission is also considering commemorative stamps, etc.

The lead for the panel is Executive Director Michael Bishop. The effort is covered under Public Law 108-59.

That's about all the article said regarding the political mechanism.

I like the reverse, n1tot. There is less for the Mint to monkey with and revise!
