I know the 58D has some wild varieties like the 58D/D/D/D/D and I know this is not that variety, but what the heck is going on with this. It looks like some wild die cracks/breaks under the tip of the 9, but what is with the raised elements to the right of the MM? Any help will be appreciated. I have more pics if needed , but they all show the same basic view.

Looks like a possible die break not making the field look flat to me. But maybe someone else has a second opinion?

I think it's a planchet problem.....to the right of the MM appears to be another area of intrest....could be gas bubbles...or a small lamination

you know, after looking at it a little more it could very well be a die crack.....look under the shoulder towards the edge....there appears to be a die crack there.....but the area to the right of the MM looks like planchet problems I see a lot

I have this very same die. What we are seeing is a die crack under the 9, and a rather intriguing grouping of die gouges under the 5 and at the base of the bust. I saved this very die because it was so wierd, but I have also spent much time studying it also.

Thanks again for the help coop- I no longer owe you a beer, I now owe you a case. I appreciate all the opinions guys. I am glad you have the same die Bob- it is interesting. The area to the right of the MM is really odd. There are al least 4 separate raised curved elements that together form a really odd appearance. Yes there is a nice die crack to the south of the bust also. I will keep this coin in the ---"ODD" coin roll where all these weird pieces end up.

If that seems normal, you don't need another beer.....
