I just bought my oldest U.S. coin and it arrived in the mail yesterday. It's a 1798 large cent in G-4 condition. I dont have a digital camera or I would post a pic. Its old but worn. no actual "damage" that I can see. most of the lettering is still there too. I had to tell someone!!!

Steve Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

That's so cool! I don't even have one of those as a type any more. I sold my type set a couple of years ago. The oldest US coin I own now would probably have to be a beat up 1890 indian I found in a roll...since I specialize in Lincolns I don't much go for age - I have over 100 coins from 1909, but very little before that.

I dont go for age either. I have the bad desire to go for sets of coins by type. You would probably like my Lincoln set. complete from 1935 forward and from 44 up its BU RD. I want a complete BU RD Lincoln set when I am done. From what I can tell it's gonna cost me!! Rolling Eyes

I guess the important thing here Steve, is to collect what you can afford. Sometimes the higher grade coins you seek will suddenly be available, and at a price you like. I have an article coming out soon that addresses that very issue. Sometimes, it's just as nice having a coin to fit the hole, and then upgrading when time and funds become available. Good luck in completing your set!

If you consider "America" to be "North and/or South America", I have some 2-real coins from Lima, Peru in the 1700s.

Good point Robert, I was going to say my oldest is a 1786 New Jersey Copper in VF25, Narrow Shield, but I did pick up a 1652 Charles II British coin from a civil war show a couple yrs back for $10. Its really in nice condition.

That's what I'm doing with the pre-1935s. It is really fun to put another coin in a empty spot. I have 22 more to go to complete the set from 1909-present(minus some early proofs) then it's all upgrading from there.

I am just looking at U.S.A. coinage right now. That's a good point and I should have been more specific. I don't have much in the way of foreigns at this point but there are plenty of new sets on the horizon. Wink

Gee Steve, it sounds like you really enjoy that new large cent, even if it is a lower grade. The nice thing about it is, you can actually touch it, carry it in your pocket even.

Just think, that coin was struck while George Washington was still alive.

Yessiree, I'll bet you got it from one of the biggest coin dealers in the world. Lifetime money back guarantee, too!

I do really enjoy the coin. I am still new to "real" collecting so everything I get is a really good feeling.
BTW, now its only 16 more lincolns and my set(minus varieties) is complete. To give a little back to one of the places thats been helping me. the guy has good prices and I emailed him with my wish list and we sent a couple msgs back and forth and it helped alot towards completing my set.
Here's the URL.

I was holding off answering this post until I could look for a Large Cent that I have/had somewhere. Haven't looked for it. SO, my oldest US Coin is an 1857 Flying Eagle Cent.
