On my way home from work today I visited a branch of my local bank. I ask the nice teller lady if see had any new 2005 rolls of cents or state quarters. To my suprise she answered, they have not made any new coins in a blue moon. I politely stated that indeed they do make new coins every year, billions of them! She gave me a look as if I were from the moon and made of cheese. We continued in a polite argument untill the bank manager overhearing us walked over and said the oregon quarters are not in yet but I do have a couple of 05 cent rolls. I talked with the bank manager for a while and he told me he usually orders some new rolls for the collectors that have accounts at his branch. I thanked him and asked him to add me to his list of collector friends.

On the way out the door I just had to give the nice teller lady a friendly wave goodby.

Wow! I wonder where this teller has been since 1999. I would have figured he/she would have noticed something strange about the quarters...especially since the person works in a bank! Well...stranger things have happened. I guess my next question would have been..'what's the numerical eqivalent of a 'blue moon''?

Bob, everyone knows that the numerical equivalent of the Blue Moon is two (a full moon twice in the same month), LOL.

Bank tellers on a whole, have little or no care for money (unless it is theirs) for they handle it so much. I am fortunate to have a bunch of tellers that go out of their way to help me in, believe it or not, four banks.

Unfortunatly, it is the big coin changing places (Brinks, Loomis, etc.) that control the fate of most of the new coins that are put into circulation. Of course if you live near a large Federal Reserve Bank that is supplied by the Mint, then you are in luck for you can get new coins through them.

Brinks, Loomis, etal supply our banks down here with the coins needed and I am very sure that there are some big time coin concernes that have established themselves with each Brinks, Loomis outlet and that is why very few if any new coins are found in local banks.

Just recently, my wife and I went to over twenty Bank of Americas in search of the new Buffalo nickel. Our take; two boxes plus forty dollars worth. Heck I saw almost five times that amount of the 2004 Peace nickel and much more than that of the 2004 Keel boat nickel. However, because of the popularity of the Buffalo nickel both armored car services had only "limited" amounts. Where did they all go?

My suggestion for those who want new coins. Down load a picture of it and then print off a few copies which you give to the bank MANAGER or the HEAD TELLER; this works better than a hit or miss situation.

You all have a great day and keep searching.

Funny you should mention about Loomis and Brinks. You are right in that they can pretty much determine who gets what and when. I went to my tiny Bank of America here, and they take care of my coin needs pretty well. I was able to get the rolls of the Buffalo Nickels shortly after they were released, as well as the California and Minnestota quarters. Yet, many of the other local banks haven't been able to supply them at all. I don't know how it works as far as getting the newer coins, but my bank always seems to have them, and the others don't. I don't ask any questions though, as long as it keeps working the way it does.
Now...Blue moons...When is the next one? I want to be ready Laughing

BOB - Sorry, no Blue moons this year. All the full moons are in the middle of the month. Now in my college days, way back when, I saw a lot of pink full moons, some times two or three a night !!!!! LOL.

My local branch manager told me that they have to order them from brinks & pay a premium. He said it was more cost effective just to use the recirculating coin rolls that come in everyday. My reply was, I thought this was a bank?...... Next week when I revisit the blue moon teller branch. I will have to make sure I get in the same line & ask the same teller the same question. I wonder if she will have a different answer this time, or maybe even better, a thought or two on the planet mars.
