The two coins dont look the same to me. Tracys coin looks like it is on the rim the site coin looks like it on the vest.

Even though the D on the rim looks different, they are from the same die. I did an overlay of the two images. The mintmark and the split serif match perfectly.

So they are from the same die. That's an oddity i've always questioned on that extra D?

They are the same coin. The BIG difference is that Tracy's coin looks to be an EMDS or MDS while the site coin is a LDS or VLDS.
Look at the site coin and you will see heavy metal flow lines by the rim and the partial "D" is flat and distorted a bit. These are sure signs of a worn die.
Tray's coin, on the other hand, has a crisper look to it without any distortion to the partial "D".
It is some times fasinating to see the difference from an EDS to a VLDS coin; the whole thing can change so that the states do not look like they came from the same die!
Great find Tracy and keep on looking, there is a lot to be found.

Some great points there wavysteps, and you are correct in that the die states can make coins look very different. The one on the site is indeed listed as an LDS. We do not go into VEDS or VLDS because we would have a problem dealing with additional thousands of pictures. When we can get them, we do put EDS, MDS, and LDS pics on the site. We do this because each die state can and will exhibit markers unique to that die state. Some markers from an EDS coin, might be completely worn away on an LDS coin. Always look for the different die states when you look up a coin. They can be accessed in each individual die's database, or they will show up on a search for a particular die.
