Hello All,

Found this from a circulated roll today. I believe I may win the "Most Ugly Award" for this piece of garbage!!! Looks like it went thru a rock tumbler. Doesn't even deserve a body bag.

Oh well --- that's the way it goes....

Everybody have a great 4th and as always ... Good Hunting!!!

Regards,
Billy

Thanks Murph.

At least one good thing -- it tells me the 83 major DDR is still out there to be found in circulation. Only I hope they all don't look like this one!

It still looks better than the one I don't have. How could people not notice that kind of doubling ?

Still very cool Billy. At least you can still see the doubling! I am sure this is not the only variety specimen that you have found in less than desireable condition. I can't tell you how many nice varieties I have found that rival the condition of your coin. Anyway, I DO think it deserves a body bag at the least. To me...if it can be positively identified as a variety, I keep it. Someday, someone will get those 'ugly' varieties as a gift or conversation piece.
Once again folks....just goes to show you that they ARE out there. Keep searching!!

Since this being the 83 major DDR -- I have a question I would like to ask everbody.

It is a known fact (I have both in my personal collection), that the obverse for this variety exhibits the exact same die markers that is mated with or without the major DDR.

Here's the questions:

Was the DDR found and pulled from production?

or

Was the normal mated reverse pulled from production and was replaced with the DDR?

What's your theory and why?

I would say the normal reverse was retired and unknowingly replaced with a DDR. If there's one obverse and two reverses, that's the best explaination isn't it?

Very nice find Billy. I hate finding nice varieties, but the coin itself it all garbage. Anyway, as you said, it proves the point that the 1983 DDR are still out there to be found.

About the die change, I would think that the die containing the DDR was pulled from production and then replaced with a die without doubling. Mint inspectors have very sharp eyes, and I cant imagine how they could miss this one.

I guess the true way to know if the DDR was pulled from production after being spotted, or just used to replace a normal die would be by studying the actual coins and determine the die state of the obverse dies in the coin with and in the coin without the doubled die. If the obverse die of the DDR cent is in an earlier state than the obverse of the coin without the doubling, the DDR was pulled out of production. And if it is the other way around, the die with the doubling was used to replace a normal die after its production life ended.
