Check out this 1972 Lincoln Cent. No, those are not surface scratches on the coin... they are overly aggressive die polishing marks. It gives the effect of a "Speedy Abe and Date". Those die identification markers are what first caught my attention, but the obverse is also a minor Doubled Die. Doubling can be seen in "B" and "T" in Liberty, and in the Motto. I thiink you can see the "U" doubled in this scanned image.... with a x16 Loupe or a x30 microscope you can also see doubling on "N" in "IN", all letters in "GOD", the “E” in “WE”, and some letters in "TRUST". There is also doubling on the “2” in the date, but I think this is working hub doubling.

I just found 6 of these after breaking down ten (10) 30-coin mounted BU Lincoln Memorial Cent sets that were commercially put together in 1972. I assume all these coins came from the same bank roll. I've had these LC Memorial boards for almost 10-years, and just now got around to putting the coins under the microscope. This type of "stuff" is a good source for finding die varieties.

Has anyone seen one of these before?

I can't seem to get this image to post Sad .... someone will copy/paste it correctly. Let me know what I'm doing wrong.

So, Murphy... how did you get the image to post? It's not taking my HTML <img src=..>. Give me some instructions, I've got some close-ups to post.

Yeah....somebody's gotta slow old Abe down a bit Laughing

You are correct in that the doubling on this coins is the Master Die Doubling that affects over half of the 1972 coins out there.

As far as posting your images, you need to use the 'Img' box above the text box here. If you place your cursor over the 'Img' box above, it will give you the format you need to use immediately above the text box. Click on the Img box once, type in the URL where your image is located, then click on the Img box again. You must make sure your image is on the net somewhere, and not on your PC as it will not read it from there.
