Had a chance to examine a rather scarce 1931S struck counterfeit cent today. Details:

Not sure I understand the economics of going through the trouble to create a die for 1931-S. The counterfeiters would have to sell a lot of fake coins for the effort pay off. But then again if no one is looking, they can probably push a bunch of coins onto the public. But then again, again, the more coins out there, the greater the risk of detection.

Any indication where the fakes were made?

I have no idea where they were made. This is the only one I have ever seen or heard of. I am assuming they are probably contemporary since nobody knew in the late 1930s where the 1931S cent would end up. Makes sense to fake them if you thought they would eventually be worth thousands...without the knowledge that they were heavily hoarded and that they would take decades to be worth $100 each in shiny BU.

Very well done article Chuck. I went to immediately check my 1931S coins, only to discover I don't have any! Laughing
In all seriousness though, this is the sort of stuff that teaches us all. Thanks for a fine article.

Chuck, great reading. I must admit if I had that fake in my collection I would be completely oblivious. And happy too since that is the only hole in in 1930 - 1958 Littleton coin folder
