I've read that the 1956D Lincoln cent has a Double Die Variety of a 5 over a rotated 5 and was wondering if this might be one of them.

Steven: I had to get my example to see if yours was the 1956/5. But the location of the 5/5 is on the wrong side. I will try to put an image here as soon as possible though. I just noticed that we don't have that one on the site yet.

Steven & Coop,
I happen to have a couple of images of this coin that I had taken a while ago. Here you go....

That a great looking coin. I guess what I have must be some kind of gouge, chip or something minor.
Thanks for the photos,
Steven

I'd agree with your assessment and say that you've got a die gouge there.
I actually found this coin in a roll I had previously searched. Tells you how much I was paying attention on that day

Bob: I guess a marker for this one would be the bottom the 6, the missing part on the bottom. My coin is the same way. I was going to say die break, but a break would leave more of a mark than less of the mark. So I don't know what to call it. It must have been a burr on the inside of the die that remained there for some time. Check on the reverse between NT on CENT. There are a lot of die gouges in that area.
On the date anolomy could be crumbling away or wearing away at a weak spot in the die.

Coop.... If you take a look at a good sampling of 1956P and 1956D coins, your will find many examples of the 'broken 6'. I think there is a broken 6 on the DDO #001 on the site. The hub with the broken 6 was used to make many dies, therefore, it can indeed be used as a marker, but it can't be the only one because of the frequency of the broken hubs use. I did a lot of research on the broken 6, and found further proof of its use in the Authoritative Reference on page 152 where they show a good picture of it on a 1956 Proof Quadrupled die. Obviously, the hub was used to make both Proof and business strike dies. The little munchkins at the mint musta got hungry

So if it was a master die damage, that would explain why the lower part of the 6 is missing. The master die would have made several hubs for that year. That makes sense then.

Garylcsr: Check out the image Bob posted as the 195/56 coin. The full image shows that type of master die break. Same page just up a few replys.

The broken 6 just looks like a normal 6 with a small crescent bite taken out of the bottom of it...no biggie, no added value--there's a bunch of them out there from both mints.
