I looked very close at all of the listed 1956D DO's listed here and I am trying to match one to these. It appears to be the 1DO-001, only the metal flow/die scratches from N/W to S/E across the date and MM are clear. The MM is in the right location but if there was a chip on the T of cents it is long gone. Also seems to be a split serif S/W. Any help. Will try to get a photo.

Steven,
I would agree that based on mintmark positioning, DDO #001 would be the closest match. However, as you can tell by the sheer number of doubled eyelids for this date, it is also a good possibility that yours might be another new variety. One way to verlfy if yours is indeed # 001 is to do a photographic overlay. If you can take another larger picture of the date and mintmark from straight on,, and post it here I might be able to do an overlay with pics I have, and we can find out one way or another.

These are the best I can get. Can't get a shot that is not blurry of the entire coin. Had a hard time finding this one again. I have at least eight that are nearly the same.

This pic will do fine. Let me play with the overlays for a bit, and I'll let you know.

Hi Steven,
I have completed the overlays. They conclusively show that your coin is indeed 1956D-1DO-001. Obviously, since the markers are not exact, it is probably a different die state. Here are the overlays. I was able to match up the doubled eyelid as well as the date & mintmark positioning.

I'd sure like to know how to do that.
Thanks,

Steven: If the die chip is missing it can be one of two things. Your die state of your coin is earlier than the marker for the die chip. Or the reverse was changed. A die crack/chip/break in that progressive order is how a die wears. So if your coin is missing that marker then it could be in an earlier die state or the reverse was changed and the reverse markers would no longer apply. Great find. I was thinking of the 1955-1DO-001 when you mentioned your find before.

Great find on the doubled eyelid. I've got a few 1954-D doubled eyelid.

Steven....Doing overlays is lots of fun (I am sure Coop can attest to that). Sometimes, it is the only way to conclusively show if a coin was struck from the same die. It does take some work to master, and although I haven't quite mastered it yet, I can get it pretty close. Coop and Chuck do some great overlays as well.
As far as what coop said about the reverse markers, he is absolutely right. It is possible it is an earlier die state, or the reverse die was changed. Sometimes, the chips and cracks on the reverse letters just disappear with wear.
Coop...is your 1954 doubled eyelid 1954D-1DO-001? I do believe that is one of the strongest doubled eyelids out there. The one I put on the site is actually pretty new to me. I can not remember where/how I got it. Of course, when you have well over 2000 varieties sitting around, it doesn't surprise me I can't remember where I got one or two of them. Did you send one to me?

Bob: I think I may have. I was buying a roll at a time on Ebay and hit someone who listed rolls from the same souce many times. I hit it on the first roll, bought several more one at a time and got all but one that was sniped away for $26+. But I got several examples of 001. I noticed the listing the other day and marked the part roll. Nice price on them now on the site.
I have an unlisted RPM with a huge die break on the reverse on the T of CENT. I looks like Ayers Rock in Australia. I had to get a strange angle to show it, so don't mind the focusing on the image. Just not to many times you need an image from that angle.
