To update:

I was just informed by Dave Harper, senior editor of Numismatic News, my article will run in the upcoming Jan. 3rd, 2006 issue. Unless I miss my guess - I believe that is also the FUN Show issue.

A follow-up article announcing another new discovery will be in the following Jan. 10th issue of NN.

Already - it's going to be a "wild & crazy" new year for die varieties!

I didn't realize that they were renovating the Memorial till I saw it on one of my coins.......

The coin was exactly as you see it. No damaging took place by me. THE MINT DID IT!

In a nutshell, the obverse doubled die that was found on the satin bison coin was also found on the ocean view satin coin; it is now possible to have in that set, a doubled die bison or a doubled die ocean view or if you are very lucky, both of them!!!!

Recent E-bay sales have shown that the first prices for these doubled dies, have dropped of dramatically; from $500.00 down to an average of $40.00 to $50.00 with a set of the two doubled dies going for $47.00.

This seems realistic for it is a minor, though nice doubled die and it is unique in that it is found on two different reverses (not to sure if that has ever happened in the history of U.S. coin making ?).

Of course, no warnings are needed, look at all 2006 coinage for oddities, it is bound to happen Very Happy

Reason for the dramatic price decrease is the same as with any other new discovery. While there are very few known and it is a major headline story they sell for big money. Once more start to surface and many people have one, the price drops off dramatically, especially if they are rather common as these are.

The 1995 DDO cent started out at above $500, and quickly dropped to $50 or less because many of them were found shortly after its discovery. I know of one bag yielding 85 of them in higher grades (MS66-MS67). There are now at least 5,000 of them passing through collector and dealer hands now.

Is there any place where I can find pictures of the reverse doubling on the Ocean In View Nickel? This is probably just machine doubling but I'd like to be sure before I toss them out. I have a couple that I got in change recently which I tried to make photos of but with mixed success. Here's mine:

This seems to be a very late die stage in that there are not the sharp edges and clean surfaces that you would expect to find on a coin of early die stage. There are two rather large areas along the rim where the die has been cracked and obliterated, a long cud built up in its place.
I didn't have the patience to play with lighting so my other photos of the lettering came out crap. It does have doubling in a lot of the lettering.

I can't quite make a guess on this one. It looks interesting, but also quite minor. Do you see any indication of notches on the letters of the reverse at all? It certainly would be worth a look though. The pictures aren't as bad as you make them seem. A little more work on the lighting and I think you will have it.
