I don't quite understand what's going on with this coin. Is it some form of die deterioration or machine doubling. The areas around the necktie, chin, mouth and back of neck shown some separation and raised. Any idea what this is?

Thanks,
Steven

In the past those were listed by Wexler as doubled dies. All within the past five years or so he has been taking them out of the listings in his files. Nobody knows for sure exactly what caused these, but the general concensus is some sort of die deterioration or polishing.

Thanks,
I guess Wexler's work is some more study I need to do.

Good luck...most of Wexler's more recent "work" isn't published and is nearly impossible to find. I wasn't saying what I said as a point that should be researched, I was saying that he alone once thought these to be doubled dies and has since recanted the listings...nobody else did or does agree that these are doubled dies, myself included.
