Extra Arm to the left and down south ??? (2005P)

This doesn't look like much more than a die gouge of some sort. There is nothing that would lead me to believe that it is part of the statue or column.

While searching thru Lincoln Memorials, I have run across many examples that show some sort of tilt in both the columns and the actual statue of Lincoln.

Just recently, two examples have come to light, a 1999 and a 2004 that exhibit doubled knees and (bars) columns that are tilted approximately 45 degrees from the east/west axis.

Can the die makers be that far off when setting the hub to die, who knows? While these tilts are not that common, they are there, in single "bars", double "bars", on either side of the statue and as memtioned, knees.

It is hard for us to surmize what is actually happening at the mint, for we are not privy to the information to the cause of these doubled dies, all we can do is guess.

As to the die pictured in this forum; my guess is that it is a tilted start of the sixth column that was aborted, reset and corrected, yet still left an impression of the initial "kiss", the tilted "bar".

There are a multitude of these doubled dies out there, evident from Wexler's numbers for 2004, which are up to WDDR-088 just for that year. I alone have accumulated 14 rolls of single "bars" (there are more than likely dups in there) since I started searching for this particular doubled die. The more interesting ones, doubled knees, doubled "bars", extra feet, shoulders, etc, are sent off for futher evaluation and consideration to be possible included on this site at a later date.

In a nutshell, there are some great oddities found and also many more out there just waiting to be discovered by us. You all have fun and good luck searching.

Got a nice discussion going here on these different kinds of statue disfigurements. I just want to add that I have found quite a few myself while searching just thru 2005P cents. Last year was a big year for the minor varieties like extra bars/disfigured statues, die clashed obv's & rev's and wavy steps. After I got 4 rolls of the statue things, I stopped picking the more common ones out. The extra bars both left and right of Lincoln seem to be quite common.
The 2006P cents have been spotted at the bank today, so tomorrow I plan to see if I can get some boxes locally to start searching thru them. The 2004-D PCGS ms69 pop-3 has gone from $400 to $1150 within the last couple weeks. So be on the lookout for high grades. I've searched quite a few new rolls when I first started and didn't pay much attention to the grade. Then one day I was almost struck blind by one of those bad boys, an ms68. I recently sold it for almost $300. Now I look at each one not only for varieties and errors, but for the lack of dings & waterspots too.
