As both Chuck and Bob have pointed out numerous times, things that are seen are not at times what you think they are. Case in point; take a look at the first photo.

When I first saw this "extra" D I thought that it was quite a find. It had both upper and lower serifs and if you look hard, you can actually see part of the "D" in the 4's loop. Now the second photo.

It still looks fairly good except when you compare the sizes of the "D's". The false "D" is much smaller than the actual mint mark. If you look real close at the false "D" you can also see metal flow lines that continue from the field into the false "D" which means that this anomaly occurred pretty close to when the coin was struck and NOT when the die was made.
I normally do not keep error coins, however, this one, with a few others, have a spot in my collection. They are there to remind me that not all is what it seems to be.
One last thing, a request. If anyone runs across a PROOF LINCOLN WAVY STEP, I would very much like to know about it and if possible see it. Thank you.
You all have a good one,

I save a lot of crapp that I find just for educational purposes. You never know when someone will ask about something and you don't have one to show as you sent it packing with all the other deadbeat Cent. So I save them just for a time when someone will ask. Always great to have what you need when you need it. (If anyone understands that last statement explain it to ME LOL)

BJ...Very nicely done. I had not seen that particular coin before, but as you mentioned, it certainly would have got my attention, and the heart beating a little faster.
Good diagnostics is the name of the game in a situation like this one. Although this one proved to be nothing more than a die crack/chip, it gave BJ the opportunity to analyze it and make his own conclusion (the right one I might add) based on the knowledge he has obtained while collecting, and from places like this forum. Once again, nicely done BJ.
