Hi STEVEN
I was going through some 98 99 00 -p looking for a wide a m and noticed some looked gold. They had a heavy gold tint to them not like copper at all. What would cause this to happen, or is it just toning?

Bruce,
Some of the color differences you see are the way the coin blanks were made. These are coins are what some refer to as 'Brass Cents" These tend to have the more yellowish appearance. The ones I know about are dated from 1985 to 1997.
From what I understand, the U.S. Mint Assay Department (in a letter to Ken Potter) admitted that some cents were mistakenly struck on "yellowish" brass-plated planchets. The amount of zinc in the mix had something to do with this. They should have been struck on the normal "red" copper-plated blanks . The mint also admitted that they could be numerous, and are not all that uncommon. I have found many over the years. You should have no problem finding them yourself as you search through more modern day coinage.
