I'm very pleased with this purchase. An uncirculated 1917 Lincoln and a planchet error. There are still bargins (at least I think) eo be had on eBay. This was won for $8.61 American.

I dont know, but it looks to me like a damaged coin. The coin does not show the Blakensly (sp?) effect associated with true planchet clips...

Hi Gabe, good morning. No, it's not a clip. I'll post another pic of the break when I get back from work. Mike (I've always been skeptical of any errors in which "less" is predominant)

Here's an edge shot, shows a crystaline structure. My guess is an improper alloy mix resulting in a faailure in cohesion.(???)

The rims fading to the edge looks like it may have been a straight clip. If the coin was cut or broke off the tapered edges near the defect look like it reached the setup mill that way. On this date the rims would be wider and we see a thining in the area opposite the defect, so I would say the Blakely effect is there. The rims we are used to seeing are thin like the area opposite side, so I would say this is a straight clip and not a planchet error. IMOHO

Took a closer look at the straight edge of this clip and it is not straight. One other thing does not sit right with me is the texture of the exposed area of the clip; shouldn't that be a lot smoother? But then again, who would want to ruin an uncirculated 1917 Lincoln cent ?????

It looks like the edge of stock used to make planchets. Probably cut too close to the edge and thus the missing area.
The collar wasn't in the area of the straight clipped area, so it would leave this area untouched.
