Went to see an old friend in Alabama today, and on the way out of town, saw a little coin shop. Stopped in and had a look around. Didn't see much, but the guy mentioned he had a few solid date rolls of pennies form the 'old days'. I bought 17 rolls at $2.10 each. The paper on the rolls looked like they were wrapped in the 50s or 60's.
Anyway, I have been finding a few RPMs and minor doubled dies in the lot, but when I opened the 1939 roll, there were less 1939 coins than other dates. Among them was the following coin. What do you think...worth 4.1 cents? Should I complain that they were mislabeled Laughing I know the picture sucks...but you get the general idea...right?

Of course you should complain Bob when you give that poor coindealer the 1909-S back. I mean now, mislabeling, just how shady is that.

Oh what the heck, just keep it and count yourself lucky that it didn't have a VDB on the reverse Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Wink

A very nice find Bob and to one who deserves it.

Just to add to what I picked out of that roll...I actually found a 1939P-1DO-001 also. It was an EF specimen. What is so interesting about this one is that it is the 14th of this variety I have found over the years. Poor Chuck hasn't (or hadn't until recently) found any of this variety in as many thousands of coins he has searched. I guess it's either feast or famine on some of these.
Has anyone else experienced this same type of luck for a specific variety? I guess it depends on how much searching you actually do, but I have had the same kind of luck on the 1936P big three. I have found 7 of the die #001, 5 of the die #002, and 9 of the die #003ver the years.

The 1909S was particularly nice because I had been in a rut for the past few months as far as finding something nice. I feel much better now Laughing

Bob, congratulations on a great find. After the tough times you have been through in the past few months a little good luck was well deserved. Now where did you say that coin shop was located?

Very nice 09S there. I'd personally call it a VG-10 from appearances...the jaw line doesn't appear to be complete enough for a F-12 grade...but hey...for the price you certainly can't beat it! Cool find!
