I'll bite,
Looks to me like some mechanical doubling north of the date and possibly an RPM due to what looks like part of an extra lower right curve inside the bottom loop of the primary MM?????????
Is this a 1DO-005???

Bob and Gabe, you are right. This is a ball mint mark; the serif with the 45 degree angle flat side should be on the bottom and the ball should be on the top.
Nice going guys, you both know your mint marks.

Steven... There is so much to learn about coins and in a case such as this, we certainly don't expect everyone to know everything. This is why this forum is such a good place to learn and teach. I would have been embarrassed if I didn't catch this one, considering how long I have been looking at these coins. However, I will never profess to know everything. I have missed more obvious stuff in the past. In other words...don't sweat it! We all learn every day!

Hi Steven - It took me a bit to figure this one out also and I had to do a bit of a research on it to comfirm what I thought that I saw. What clued me in was that it just looked odd for I was looking at a batch of 1946-S and this one just didn't fit in from the others that I was looking at.
Actually, you very rarely see upside down mint marks and probably the most common of these would be from New Orleans (dosen't make any difference on that particular mint mark) Other than that, some of the S mint marks could be rotated and not caught (sans serif is one), however, ball serif and serif S have distinct serifs at their respective termini and should have been caught at the mint.
One more question; beside the listing of II-C-14, BLUNDERED MINTMARK, is there anyother listings associated with this type error?

A point your making is one that I haven't followed closely but is one that I will in the future. (Separation of year and mint prior to search). I have been slacking in that and am sure to miss the not so obvious.
Another lesson learned
I guess if there wasn't one more lesson around the corner to be learned this would just be plugging holes eh
Thanks,
Steven

WAVYSTEPS,
You have to put this up for sale on Ebay so we can establish a true market value. Then we can all spend Memorial Day weekend looking for upside down mintmarks. Since I am in a dry spell I need something to shoot for.

Now I have an excuse to re-check for inverted MMs.
I remember seeing several 46-s MMs from broken punches at the lower half, now I need to see if they're inverted.
My learning questions:
Are inverted MMs listed and if so where and what do they call them?
Is the ball type rarer for 46-s than sans and trumpet?
Is there also a large and small S for 46-s?
Does a list exist on how many punch types by year are known?
