It is great sitting down by your scope and checking out rolls of Lincoln cents for you never are quite sure what you will run across.
Dimes, foreign coins, even nickels are some of the things that are run across and not only in hand wrapped rolls, but also Brinks rolls as well. And of course you will always find more than a few "wheaties" in each $25.00 box. But today I hit a new one in a cello wrapped Brinks roll when this came popping out.
Okay granted, it is at best a VG-8 (three letters do show in LIBERTY) and it makes you stop and wonder how a 115 year old coin got into this predicament.
But wait, that is not the only surprise that came from this box; I found this one last night.
I guess that I am on a streak, one that I wish would not end, but knowing fully well that it will. That is what searching is all about and it does come with its highs and lows.
You all have a good one and keep on searching, they are out there.

Holy Cow Neffman!
It's been 2 or 3 years since I've found an Indian Head penny in my searches. At one time I was finding one in every two boxes I searched, but then I quit finding them.
As for the 1994 DDR Holy Cow!!!

I can certainly agree with everything you said BJ. I have found many -weird- things in some of these bags and rolls I have gone through. As far as your 1994 DDR...welcome to the family of owners of that great coin. I have had mine for about a month now. I really do like looking at it. Maybe you have inherited some of Mr. Murph's luck from earlier this year? My turn next

HMMMM!!!! - Talking about luck there Mr. Bob - Didn't you find a 1909-S Lincoln cent just a while back
Just kidding of course. It takes hours upon hours of dedicated, intellegent (knowing what to look for) searching and a 1000 to 1 odds that the next cent looked at will be any kind of error or variety is a fair bet. Yet, we know that they are out there.
I did have a horrible thought though last night talking about variety and error coins.
The end of the one cent coin is approaching, whether we like it or not. The last year in limited production? More than likely 2009 or 2010 when what happens. Of course all prices will be adjusted to reflect that change and the penny will become useless to the point that it will not be excepted at any type story for any type purchase. What could happen next is scary, but think of this; The government does a recall on all one cent coins, exchanging them for their cash equivalency for one year after the last issuance of the one cent coin. People realizing that the coin is now useless, will be only to happy to rid themselves of the billions that are stashed in draws, piggy banks, jars, etc. and the government will be extremely happy in getting them back, for they can then melt the coins and make a profit from the copper that is salvaged (should be in the neighborhood of $5.00 to $7.00 a pound by then). Just think of the varieties, discovered and undiscovered, that will be melted down. The effect, similar to the Hunt brothers fiasco of years back when more than a few silver and yes, even gold coins met a similar fate.
Will this come to pass? Who knows for this comes from a person (me) who at times has wild ideas and puts them down for all to see
You all have a good one

I will begin stockpilling cents for now on so that I have some to look through when the cent's production is discontinued.
Wavysetps, your 'nightmare' throught is very plausible. The US government has recalled past denominations before, and I dont see why they wouldnt do the same this time...

And if by chance that scenario does happen, can you imagine what your collection of cents' errors, and varieties will be worth??

BU Coins from different years would be the ones most sought for errors/varities then. I save BU rolls from most years, most opened now with a few OBW rolls that I've found nothing in yet. I've a couple of boxes of 2002-D & 2004-D rolls I've never opened yet. Probably stay that way for a while yet as nothing too big was not found those years. I guess it fints in well with my hoard I've set back. Circulated coins I still roll up and spend after I've looked through them. I fing the weirdest thing in circulated coins, but most of the time they do look like all they were good for is spending monies. Just my thought on what to save.
