Another thing to note with this thread is that walkingdude sent the coin to the wrong person initially because the coin is not technically an "error", and I'm sure the person he sent it to is an error person. This is one of the biggest problems with people using the terms "error" and "variety" interchangably...not to mention the fact that I get questions about errors very frequently and find myself having to explain that I don't know errors because all I study are varieties and die varieties. Too often people don't know the difference.

Doubled dies, repunched mintmarks, over mintmarks, and repunched dates are NOT errors. They are die varieties.

Bob,
I got the penny back today and look it over again, I do remember most of what you said to look for. I couldn't remember what it looked like until I seen it again. Laughing

Glad you got it back so quickly. As I sated earlier, sometimes, it is nice to just study a known variety carefully so you can understand what you will be looking for in the future. Granted...not all doubled dies will be as strong as this one, but it sure helps to be able to associate this form of doubling with others you may come across. Thanks again for giving me the opportunity to examine it for you. BTW...You now have the only 1972 doubled die I don't have. Time for me to get searching again!

I don't know if I would call it scarce, maybe very rare? Laughing But check out the MS-65 Prices on the site and see how the examples price.
Usually the price being higher could mean there are few made or more demand for this die. So it carry a higher priemum than the rest except for 001. One I bought off ebay was 002 about my third coin in the set. Most I don't have yet though. Always nice to find something, anything but nothing common as sand. That is true Mike. It is very scarce..or maybe even rare enough that I don't have one. I have had the opportunity to purchase one, but the price was kinda steep at the time, and probably more so now. But...I do have the BIG one. The 1972P-1DO-001 and just about all of the other 1972 varieties on the site are mine. I will be patient for #002, and will fill out that year sometime

It is important to note that a doubled die is technically NOT considered an "error" coin. This is where people can go wrong sending the coin to the wrong person for review. If you send a die variety (which doubled dies are) to an error specialist, they are likely not to be able to answer all pertinent questions about the piece, where sending an error coin to me would get you a blank stare. Please learn the different terms to better your experiences with the hobby. Errors are not die varieties and die varieties are not errors.
