I wanted to put this under Coppersleuth's heading on this subject, but I know Bob, Chuck and others would never let me live it down putting an error under a variety heading, LOL.
I found this progression last year and never did anything with it even though it is interesting.
1. The start of the die crack. Notice the faint line under "WE".
2.A die chip starts to form and the faint line under "WE" disappears.
3. The die crack lengthens and the die chip becomes large.
4. The die crack is still lengthening towards the south. The die chip is still becoming larger.
5. The die crack becomes stronger in the south part and extends to the north. The die chip is still growing.
6. The die crack extends to the E in "WE". The whole southern part of this die crack is still strengthening.
7. A new die chip forms on the southern part of the die crack.
8. The begining of a new die chip to the north of the first one is starting. Both the main and the southern die chip are now large. This was the last state that I could find.
It is rare to find a progression like this and I imagine that the obverse die was pulled soon after the last picture.
Way cool pics and info BJ. I have managed to find a couple of that very die, but it seems you have nailed it with the progression pics and narrative. Great Job! _________________ Bob Piazza
