The normal submission to a grading company, when it is recieved, is full of anticipation concerning the final grade given to one of your favorite coins. As you anxiously try to open the impregnable envelope with your bare hands (that just does not work) your anxiety mounts and your heart begins to race. Finally, the little plastic encased coin pops out of its bondage and you stare at it, looking at the final grade that is two grades lower than you thought. Your first outburst is "what, are those guys blind?" followed shortly after by, "that will be the last time THEY get my coins!". We all know that this happens.
However, there is a different side to this coin (excuse the pun).
Having missed the postman the day before, I was forced to travel to the local post office to retrieve my latest submission, which by the way was about two weeks late in come ( ANACS had changed locations and is still in a state of some confussion). Of course, I did not bring a pair of scissors along, so I had to wait until I got home to open that fortified envelope. Then out it popped; an AU-50 !!!!, "what, are those guys blind, cant they see that this as at best a VF-35".
Life is full of little surprises and today was no exception. The moral to the store; I definitly need to re-evalute my grading skills, LOL. Anyway, here is a picture of the much talked about 1946-S Lincoln cent, with inverted ball serif (knob tail) mintmark
You all have a good one and keep on searching.

Wow, AU-50! I thought this coin was a XF-45 from the pictures of the mint mark.
Saw the article in the July 3rd CW, but the pic they used in the article doesnt show the serifs of the mint mark well, which I can imagine will cause confusion within to the average collector.
Now, I need to get my hands in one of those inverted mint marks!

Hi Steven - Just got done sending you a PM on this die, however, for everyone explanation, yes, I do believe that this is an inverted mintmark.
It is very similar to the example that Bob P. sent photos of, but due to circulation damage, I can not be 100% sure if they are the same.
Great find Steven and congratulations.

Didn't get the PM but thanks for the response. I've looked at a lot of 46S cents but finally came up with this one no better than F-12. Should fill the hole till I can find a better one
Thanks,
Steven

Just wanted to let you all know that Steven has found a 1946-S inverted mint mark Die # 1. The reason for it being not exactly the same is that the diesate on Steven's coin is LDS while the coin pictured in the begining of this thread is EDS
You all have a good one and keep on serching.

Hello Rob,
The picture that Murph took is of a regular ball serif mintmark that is NOT inverted. The one just above your post is inverted as is the one that is the lead into this thread.
Hope that this helps.
