At one time I had all three 1943's in PCGS 67. The only one I bought sight unseen through the mail was the '43-S and that had a filled mint mark. You could barely see it. It was still a 67. I was not happy about it. I bought it from Bowers and Merena no less.

Regarding this coin are there some hits on the obverse in the letters "IN G" and on the S in TRUST?

Now that is a very nice coin and I would guess at a MS-65.

For today's gripe. What the heck is a quality coin doing in a cardbord flip? Those little "encapsulating" devices may have a use for coins valued under $10.00, but for a coin worth potentially thousands? When I look at the PVC (plastic), acid (paper), and the staples used to secure that coin into that flip (one little slip in trying to pry those staples out and having them come in contact with the coin), I imagine the possibilities of detriorating grade that could cost the owner a bunch of money. With a jump of $1000.00 between MS 64 to 65 and another jump of $800.00 between MS 65 to 66 you can see my point.

I am not trying to preach, however, when buying quality coins, look not only at the coin, but also what it is in. That may give you a hint of how it has been treated and its true condition.
The coin pictured in this post, I would have treated as a low MS quality coin and would have priced it according to that grade if I had the chance to buy it. Maybe I would have missed out on the buy for not willing to spend the extra bucks, however, in the long run, I would have slept better.

So, what do you look for when buying a quality coin? First, it should be encapsulated by a top grading company and NOT one of the fly-by-nights, or want-to-be's. Second, if it is not encapsulated by a good grading company, then it should be in a non-PVC protective device such as non-plasticized coin flip or a hard acrylic snap type holder. Of course there are other considerations to take into mind; the person selling the coin, the money involved and the condition.

Wow! Haven't checked in in a couple days. Some answers due. There is no mark in the East obverse field on the coin. I got a little jumply and lively when I got the coin and neglected to set the white balance for the pic. There is some spotting on the obv. under 10X, as common to steel. It's at PCGS now for Xpress Service. (entered on 9/25) It's possible I'll have the results on friday, if not, monday. If you ever dealt with them, you can understand my first hope is not to get a BB. Other than that, I'm looking for a 65.
As far as the cardboard holder goes, I just bought the coin and didn't have in my hands but an hour before it was back in the mail. If you want to know results before I do, the submission number is 9056687.
I'll take a better pic and post when it geys back. Mike

Mike - Don't get me wrong, I am not gripping at you. It is the people that put it in that junk holder in the first place that I think are wrong.

Unless there is something wrong that we can not see, I think that you have a good bet that it will come in at a 65.

Bj, it's "the glass is half empty thing." At least the coin was saved, valued, and protected. The person I bought it from didn't have it for very long either. He just bought it and turned it over for a quick profit. Said he didn't want the hassel of getting it graded. He's offered to buy it back after he got subsequent offers. Other than some slight spotting, the coin's clean. Mike

My concern with ungraded keys is that there are some very great cleaning jobs or re-colored or re-toned ones that are tricky so I assume for a high dollar coin someone might have already tried grading got a BB and decided to sell it off raw to get out of it.

Steel cents are tricky, we get used to spotting cleaned copper but steel cents are different. I've noticed that they can be cleaned and be hard to tell.

Back to this one, it looks original and the minor spotting might be a good sign that it's original and won't get a BB...

I'd bet on 64 and hope for 65

Well... I dont know if I qualify as a YN, Im 19....

Lol! Im just messing with you guys. Although I am 19, I will cherrypick that variety for myself. I refuse to buy expensive RPMs and doubled dies when I can cherrypick them myself for a lot less money.

It would be a good idea to give that coin to someone who is just starting Lincoln cent variety collecting. I know a couple of people around my age of collect, but all of them, like me, are well involved into the world of variety coin collecting.

drwstr123- Ill let you know if I come across any YN who this coin might be good jump-start to variety collecting.
