Looks like your coins were plated in something. From the dates, it very well may be mercury. In that case, you need to be very careful as the mercury is very toxic. The copper you are seeing is the result of that plating beginning to wear off and exposing the true metal content of the coin.

Ouch!. Thank you for the heads up. I will see if it is worth getting them tested or I may just chunk them. Nothing is worth putting my health at risk.

Definitely plated with something or harshly chemically cleaned, or both. Not something worth messing with.
