Wow!! It pays to look for stuff that has not been discovered. I'm now checking all cents for type 2 reverses!

Boy - losing that '96 Wide-AM discovery piece had to hurt more than any of the others. And being the only one known and being so well documented - it is kind of like stealing the Hope Diamond. If it surfaces in any public arena, it will be quickly identifed as stolen property. Hopefully the criminals responsible are unaware of this fact and will hang themselves when they try to unload it.
About the crime itself -- this seems to happen alot. My favorite 'Flea Market' coin dealer was beaten and robbed 30 years ago after being followed home from a coin show. In recent years, it has almost become a common occurance. If I were a dealer, I think I'd be paranoid about every car in the rear-view mirror all the way home.

I have two suggestions, (Now that the hoerses have gone), after the barn door was left open"! In essence, this is what happens when people don't take the proper precautions. People don't realize it, but therwe is a LOT of money involved! The face value, normally would not warrant this caution, but when the uniqueness of certain coins, etc is involved, then the risk goes up. In most cases, the "robbers, or thieves, don't realize what they are getting, or do they? Not everyone who goes to one of these shows is a coin collector. They may be a "collector", but as one who looks foe varieties, etc, and fair exchenge. The need for anything that can be exchanged for the dope habit, or just plain thieves!
One: Why not have an off-duty police, or sheriff, accompany the dealer to his safety deposit box, or home?
TYwo: Why not have a special depository for all the ones who are setting up bourse tabnles, etc, in the same place the show is going to be held?
Having something like this will cost money, and with good reason, but at the same time, it will save money, and the risk of being beaten, and/or killed, along with the loss of the "goods"?
I'm sure that Brinks, or Loomis, or any other armoured car service would make some sort of arrangement for the security of the merchandise, and the safety of the individuals involved.
When you advertise that there is going to be a very large amount of money, mostly cash, in some place, and time, there are those who will figure out a way to try and get some, if not all of it! Every registered dealer, should have the training in the uise of firearms, and the license to carry a weapon, ESPECIALLY when transporting any money, etc, for the ocassion. Billy is not the first, nor will he be the last, but the least one can do is give it some thought!
My 2 cents worth!
Dick

Well.. it is likely that some 1996 wide am will have a rotated reverse, but it is possible that many were struck with normal oriented dies.

My tinking indicates that it will be a long time before it is found again, unless some collector happens on it, or a collector, who did not know of the find, happens to find it , and report it as his/her new find. Not all are variety collectors, nor error collectors.

The problem is if this guy were to get caught, it would be just a slap on the wrist. I miss the days when we used to hang thieves.
My local coin dealer has a concealed weapons permit & packs a 9mm. I pity the poor bastard who tries to rob him.......

What a shame.! Dont ya just hate a thief..
You never know, the thief may think, "oh its just a penny" & toss it aside to end up who knows where..
What would the coin be worth.?

It is my opinion that the existence of a 1996 wide AM cent would need to be proven before word is spread about its authenticity. The story surrounding this coin is suspect at best, and until I see an example to verify, I am not convinced it exists. I have seen the photographs provided of the coin, and do not believe it to be genuine from these images.
