It was just a thought or theory but it ocurred to me that due to the economy and the vast amount of people unemployed or underemployed that stashes of pennies across the country will find their ways out of dresser drawers, closets, garages etc and back to the bank. Pennies that have sat in jars or cigar boxes for 10, 20, 30 years. Who knows what treasures have been sitting at home and now are back in circulation just waiting for us to discover? When I go to the bank for rolls I always ask for hand rolled pennies that an individual might have brought in. It's getting harder to find them these days though, maybe because the coinstar thing is so popular, but when I do, I always have pretty good luck.
Wishing all of you great luck and a happy pleasant weekend.
Rock

Hand wrapped or not..doesn't really matter.

People are dumping coins into the machines in record numbers, and nobody checks them after they are dumped. They are taken back to a facility where they are rolled and wrapped by the millions, then resold to banks. Nobody is looking through any of these coins before you re-buy them from the bank...so don't worry about having to get hand wrapped rolls.

For the last three or four months all the coins I have been going through from my local bank, are basicly coin star coins. My bank has a coin star type machine in the loby (althoough not a coin star machine). If I call them the day before their weekly pickup, they will reserve a bag or two of what ever denomination I request. Right now I have 1 1/2 bags of cents to go through plus a bag of nickels.
Oh ya, the bags are
cents = 50.00
nickels = 200.00
dimes = 1,000.00
quarters = 1,000.00
and on the very rare occations they have them
Halves =1,000.00

Good point about hand wrapped or not. People are dumping their coins right now to pay the bills and buy food. One way or the other there are lots of coins moving into circulation and that should net some nice finds hopefully.

Roll searching this week brought me four 1959 AU's...as if someone opened up a BU roll and began spending...maybe I need to check out some quarter or half rolls...maybe they are spending silver also? One never knows.

I bought a large plastic bottle from someone I knew. The bottle weighed over 55 LBS. It took years for them to fill it. It was started by a Father that gave it to his Son to complete. A lot on nice BU coins in there. I have about 20 rolls so far. Lots of copper coins, but I'm not keeping them. The go back into circulation. I've found BU coins as far back as 1977. Nice thing to search through. I found a 2004P-1DR-001. Several RPMs. Most not listed though. 8( But the search continues.

Last November I talked to my credit union. They agreed to let me take the $50.00 bags of cents they acumulate from the coin machine as long as I don't bring them back. Wanted to see what the holidays brought in. Nov. & Dec. averaged 2 bags a month, after the holidays things slowed down to 1. April and May back up to 2 bags again, so there is a good chance the economy is responsible. By the way, these machines are not as accurate as people think. One of my bags contained $61.00 and an assortment of coins from other nations. Sometimes dimes.

Your correct, they are not all that accurate. I have had some bags with 45 dollars, some with 60 dollars and the vast majority will contain a good number of canadian coins, along with nickels, dimes and even some quarters.

That figures, on top of the 8% or whatever it charges they can rip another 20%.

I avoid using them, better to spend the coins or bring a few rolls to the bank. Just be sure it's not the same bank I ask for rolls Wink

I am in the middle of a very nice transaction but need to figure out a good price to offer so far i think about 500.00 is good or i hope i am close i would hate to offend a neighbor. he has a 5 gallon paint bucket (no paint in it) but it is full to the top. he said he inherited it and it has come from as far back as his Grandfathers brother. so i am thinking there are maybe 75 years of collecting in that one bucket. it is an old bucket too. we have no clue as to weight cause we are both broke back. and no nothing to do with the mountain. lol sorry meds again. anyway anyone have an idea what 5 gallons of cents are worth.? or had any dealing with such a deal. i want to be fair he is a friend but i want to make something off it too
thanks all
Gary

I had a 2 quart jug of cents that I took to coinstar and it was roughly 2500 cents.

I'm guessing that a full 5 gallons is about 25,000 cents.
So $500 would be 2 times face.

Best case if someone could get a weight it's roughly 144 cents per pound.
Be careful trying to move that bucket, it should weigh almost 175lbs.

I had a 2-1/2 gal buckef full of wheats, and it weighed 80 lbs.. That was before I got folders and tubes, etc, so your estimates are pretty well on the mark.

I think we are almost there. I told him today that about $300.00 would be about right and he excepted that. I may find some good coins in it as he said he got it from an inheritance and it has been down the line starting with his Grandparents he is a grandparent himself so it has to have at least 50 years of coins in it. I cant wait to see the bottom and knowing me i may even read the last page first lol (get it)
anyway i will keep you all informed of what i do or don't find
Gary
